The developers of the Android-x86 project have recently unveiled some images of Android 9 Pie for both 32-bit and 64-bit personal computers, along with LTS kernel 4.19.80. This operating system brings many advantages of Android along with hardware acceleration support for OpenGL ES 3.x on AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and QEMU.
Bringing Android 9 Pie to personal computers via Android-X86
This new update brings support for OpenGL ES3.0 through SwiftShader for rendering software on unsupported GPUs. Secure boot from UEFI and installation on UEFI disk are also supported.
To aid in seamless installation, a text-based GUI installer is integrated into this release. Theme support for GRUB-EFI has also been added for users who want to customize their GRUB.
You can also run ARM applications through the root bridge mechanism found in Settings => Android-x86 options. Experimental support for Vulkan on new Intel and AMD GPUs is also included in this build, which can be activated through Boot in advanced options => Vulkan support.
This build also features a new taskbar acting as an alternative launcher, with a boot menu and recently run applications at the top corner of the screen. It supports free window mode. Lastly, you can run apps vertically on landscape devices without having to rotate the screen.
Other features supported by this latest Android-x86 release, as per the official changelog, include multitouch, sound, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sensors, Camera, Ethernet (DHCP only), integrated mouse for virtual machines, automatic USB and SD card mounting.
