Established in 1995, the Phung family's stall used to sell a bowl of porridge for 2,000 dong. Today, the price has risen to 20,000 dong, yet it continues to attract a diverse clientele.
Crowded Spot: A 20,000 Dong Porridge Hub in Saigon's Central Hub
The squid porridge spot is situated at the intersection of Pho Duc Chinh Street, District 1, Saigon. The owner, Mrs. Dinh Ngoc Phung (50 years old), reveals that the stall, founded by her family, opened its doors in 1995. 'Currently, my mother is elderly and has handed over the business to my sisters. All the cooking recipes are passed down by my mother,' shares Mrs. Phung.

According to Mrs. Phung, in the early days, each bowl of porridge at the stall cost only 2,000 dong, attracting mainly laborers and locals. After more than 20 years, the current price for a bowl of squid porridge is 20,000 dong, with the majority of customers being office workers in the vicinity.
'Even though it's located in the central district of District 1, the stall maintains an affordable price, hence the large customer base,' comments Mr. Tan An (residing in Binh Thanh, Saigon).
Every day, the household members divide tasks, from market shopping to food preparation, early in the morning. The stall owner reveals that the rice used for porridge is of high quality, creating a delicious, tender, and fragrant dish. 'To achieve the sweet taste of the porridge, we use small pieces of dried squid cooked with pork bones and dried shrimp,' discloses the stall owner about the recipe for this delightful dish.
The menu offers a variety of choices such as squid porridge, thick noodle soup with pork, and meat-filled wontons. Those who enjoy extra toppings can order chicken feet, chicken thighs, or preserved duck eggs.

'Whenever I have squid porridge, I always order an extra bowl of preserved duck eggs to enhance the flavor; it's delicious,' shares a regular customer of the stall. According to many, the porridge reaches perfection when paired with preserved duck eggs. However, some note that the accompanying fried dough sticks can be a bit greasy at times.
Due to consistent quality and affordable prices, the stall remains bustling with customers even after lunchtime. Mr. An, a loyal customer, states: 'I am quite particular about my food, but this is one of the few porridge stalls that I like. The rice grains in the porridge expand without breaking, and the taste is both sweet and fragrant. The additional dishes are skillfully crafted as well.'
Upon arrival, customers will indulge in the dishes served on low tables and chairs. Despite being a bit aged, the space is spacious and clean. The stall also provides refreshing drinks and parking space for customers in the front.
