Camping beneath Vinh Tuy Bridge.
Vinh Tuy Bridge is a bridge spanning the Red River, with its central end located in Vinh Tuy Ward, Hanoi, connecting Hai Ba Trung District and Long Bien District. Right underneath, due to sediment accumulation, there's a wide, airy, and incredibly ideal plot of land. It's like a forgotten gem amidst the urban hustle and bustle, just over 30 minutes' drive from the city center. With the first steps taken beneath the bridge, you'll immediately feel the difference in the fresh, airy atmosphere.

In the far distance lies the livestock of local herdsmen.
There are numerous pathways to access this area. If you're coming from Vinh Tuy Bridge, cross over the bridge, turn towards the embankment, take a right up the slope, and head straight into the first alley. Pass Vietnet football field about 1 km ahead. The roads here are not wide, but sufficient for cars to enter if you're visiting with family. Pay attention to the weather; if it has rained in the days prior, it's best to avoid coming here as the area may become muddy, making transportation difficult.
On dry days, accessing this plot of land is quite straightforward.
This weekend destination in Hanoi isn't exactly new, as backpackers discovered and camped here several years ago. However, recently, this spot has become popular again among households or family groups seeking weekend retreats or holiday getaways. Due to its spacious and airy terrain, it's not uncommon to spot groups engaging in off-road activities like off-road vehicles, flycams,... In the distance, some may be seen fishing, enjoying the late afternoon.
Mostly families come here for camping.
A lovely small family is camping here.
The land here is quite expansive, open, and flat, primarily composed of sandy soil. It's not too hard nor too soft, making it an ideal playground for children to frolic freely. However, parents should absolutely instruct their children and pay attention to remind them not to venture too close to the riverside, as it's easy to slip and pose a danger.
Camp groups are scattered around the land area.
Taking a leisurely stroll together around the vicinity.
During this brief visit, my friend and I only had just over an hour. We happened to pass by the bridge, then quickly decided to turn back and descend below for a while, bringing along some snacks and a few bottles of water. We laid out a mat and sat together by the riverside, trying to inhale the fresh, invigorating air that the city, on the other side, full of dust and grime, never seems to offer.
My friend and I immersed ourselves in the atmosphere here, so we chose a spot right by the riverside, alongside a few other family groups.
It's a wonderful time for relaxation, consisting of eating and chatting.
Recalling last year, without fail every week, we would bring out the tent, firewood, and food to entertain ourselves on days when we didn't venture far. Gathering around the campfire, we lived slowly together here on weekends after months of hard work. One speaks, another responds, we blend into each other by the fire, amidst the smoke-filled pot, amidst cards played late into the night, sometimes chatting until dawn before lying down to sleep without noticing.
It feels like being separated from the outside world.
Arriving at the midstream sandbank of the Red River, you'll feel all the tension melt away.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- This location is extremely ideal for gentle picnics or gatherings due to its spaciousness, flat terrain, easy camping, tent pitching, campfire building, and singing without causing disturbance.
- Monitor the weather before deciding to go, as this area is prone to flooding, sinking, and erosion during rain.
- Clean up and collect garbage after camping to maintain the area for everyone.
- For families with young children, keep an eye on them to prevent them from running off the site and heading towards the riverside, as it's prone to sinking and dangerous falls.
