That's the question on the minds of many readers as the gang genre once had its heyday in the past. Will the success of Tokyo Revengers be enough to resurrect this forgotten genre?
Tokyo Revengers has been gaining popularity, especially since the anime's debut in April 2021. The story of gang relationships and loyalty has played a crucial role in the success of this anime/manga series. What fans are curious about is whether, with the success of Tokyo Revengers, the gang genre will make a comeback?
In the 70s and 80s, famous anime series also featured gang members as main characters. Characters like Sukeban Deka, Hana no Asuka-gumi!, and Otokogumi were among the most well-known. The rise of this genre reflected the increasing gang activities in Japan. In the 1960s, yakuza and many smaller gangs were at their peak, even though they rarely collaborated.
Yakuza focused on profit and criminal activities to make money, while most smaller gangs simply caused chaos for their own interests. Due to the nature of these gangs, yakuza tended to look down on their behavior. These smaller gangs mainly comprised teenagers and young adults, with some even younger members. For them, breaking the law and becoming delinquents was a way of life.
Although there are still members of these gangs today, they are not as powerful as before. As these groups diminish, the popularity of stories about these delinquents is on the rise. Manga, anime, and even live-action films with plots centered around the gang lifestyle have been produced and achieved a certain level of success.
However, in recent years, this genre hasn't been favored by many fans, especially in Japan. Nevertheless, the success of Tokyo Revengers may breathe new life into the delinquent genre, injecting a fresh vitality into these storylines and bringing the genre back to its golden age.
