Google's relentless efforts to tighten control over Chrome web browser extensions currently include providing greater clarity on the issue of user data collection and usage. The internet giant will unveil a new policy in January 2021, requiring extension developers to reveal the use of user data for extensions in the Chrome Web Store.
Developers of Chrome web browser extensions must explain the types of data they are collecting, such as login information or personal identification. They must also pledge to respect the new policy, implemented to prohibit selling data to third parties, those who use user data for unrelated purposes, and relying on data for credit checks and lending.
Extension developers may start providing information now, although it will not be displayed on the Chrome Web Store until January 18, 2021. Google plans to issue notifications to all developers if they fail to disclose this information after the specified timeframe.
This action won't guarantee honesty from extension developers, as abusers can still falsely report what they collect. However, it may be easier to remove dishonest developers once detected. This policy will also be helpful for users to decide whether to install a certain extension as they can know what data that extension wants.
