Delayed due to COVID-19 and the adverse impacts it brought to the economy, the new Chrome version continuously faced postponements in its release schedule. However, at this moment, Google is ready to unveil Chrome OS 84, much anticipated by users for a long time.
The first notable improvement is the Overview mode, allowing users to view all open windows. The current user interface permits apps to be dragged and placed on either side of the screen for separate viewing. With multiple monitor setups, users can seamlessly drag apps to secondary screens using this feature.
Next, the virtual keyboard gains the ability to resize. You can achieve this by dragging the corners of the floating keyboard to select the desired size. Until now, this feature has been hidden and can only be enabled through Flag. However, with version 84, the enhancements are being openly disclosed.
When it comes to imaging, Chrome OS will now allow you to take photos using the volume button as the capture button. You can press the volume up or down button to take a photo or start/stop video recording within the Camera app. Recorded videos will also be saved in MP4 (H.264) format to facilitate easier use in other applications.
The company also introduces a new Explore app to replace the Get Help app on Chromebooks. The new app not only shares device tips and tricks but also includes a Perks section providing links to deals. One of the perks for US customers is 100 GB of free storage space through Google One for one year.
Google's OS brings forth several other improvements including additions to the Linux environment (Beta), allowing users to control micro access rights in Settings, enhancing the ChromeVox screen reader tool to search within menus, and much more.
Updates for the Chrome browser also enhance usability and security. The browser now supports application shortcut keys for PWAs, making it easier to perform tasks quickly within pinned web apps. For security features, the browser will now block unsafe downloads from HTTPS pages. Additionally, there are improvements in resource usage for Chrome tabs in the background.
With the deployment just beginning, not all users will immediately get their hands on the update on their Chromebooks. It will take a few days for the update to roll out to everyone. You can check if the update is available on your device by accessing Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for Updates.
If you're someone who enjoys watching online movies on your phone or computer, then Netflix's latest update will pique your interest. Netflix is now available on Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max, providing users with more options for an enhanced viewing experience.
