In early 2020, Google focused its resources and funding on the education sector, aiming to connect students and teachers during the social distancing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. As online learning persists, the search giant has announced innovations for Chrome OS.
Firstly, Chrome OS will introduce a native screen recording tool to make teaching tasks for educators more seamless. This new capability is set to roll out in March as part of an operating system update, possibly Chrome OS 89 release.
Google has also promised to unveil 40 new Chromebooks this year, although the company has not disclosed any specific details about these upcoming devices. Notably, the new Chromebooks will include touch pens, touchscreens, dual cameras, and LTE connectivity.
In addition, the Mountain View giant is implementing enhancements in audio, video, and stability for Meet on Chromebook. Regarding accessibility features, Chrome OS's screen reader ChromeVox now includes menu search capabilities and voice switching based on text language.
Lastly, Google will reinforce security features for students learning online. Parents can link their child's school account to their personal Google account through Workspace for Education, as long as these accounts are managed via Family Link. This will allow parents to control how their child uses the device and apps when logging into their school account.
