Slow internet speeds can frustrate users, but Google's Data Saver for Chrome alleviates this. By reducing data usage and accelerating page loads, browsing becomes more enjoyable.
Previously exclusive to HTTP sites, Data Saver is now expanding to HTTPS pages on Chrome for Android, ensuring faster and safer browsing even on slow networks.
For those yet to install Chrome on Android or iOS, download it here for a seamless browsing experience:
- Download Chrome for Android
- Download Chrome for iPhone
To check if Chrome has optimized a page, look for an icon next to the URL in the browser bar. Google says this option reduces data usage and speeds up browsing on slow internet connections.
This means that if you're using a 2G connection or slower, or if Chrome estimates loading any content in poor network conditions, it will take just over 5 seconds. While this is rare in the US with high-speed network connections, it's very useful in areas still developing LTE infrastructure.
In a blog post, the search giant explains that when optimizing HTTPS pages, only URLs shared with the company, cookies, login information, and other data are kept private.
Notably, Lite browsing mode is currently unavailable for HTTPS sites on the web platform. If you're browsing on a computer, Chrome Lite is limited and only works on HTTP sites.
Lastly, Data Saver doesn't work in Incognito mode and isn't available on Chrome for iPhone, iOS. Android users can activate Data Saver in the browser settings and enjoy the benefits.
