Following Mozilla and Opera, Chrome is the next browser to remove Avast and AVG extensions from their web store after reports claimed they were spyware masquerading as security software. However, Avast and AVG owners argue that user data collection is necessary to provide advertised services.
Google has removed several Avast security software extensions from the Chrome Web Store following similar actions by Mozilla and Opera, after these extensions were found to collect more user data than allowed for advertising functions. Although Google has not made any official announcements on the matter, NDTV revealed that banned extensions include Avast SafePrice, Avast Online Security, and AVG SafePrice.
