Google began testing the ChromeOS screen recording feature last year with basic options and interfaces similar to screen captures. Users can record the entire Chromebook screen, windows, or a manually selected portion of the screen.
ChromeOS introduces the ability to save videos as GIF images
However, the dilemma lies in the storage of these videos in WebM format, optimized for the web and crafted to conserve data. Furthermore, the WebM format being relatively new might not be supported by certain applications, potentially causing inconvenience when users share screen capture videos with friends or family members.
In a recent update to the codebase, the ChromeOS team is experimenting with support for recordings in GIF format.
GIF, an animated image format born in 1987, has become deeply ingrained in user culture. It enjoys widespread support across various applications and can be effortlessly shared within messaging platforms.
It is anticipated that the file size of GIF format recordings will be significantly heavier compared to WebM. Nevertheless, for brief screen capture videos, this could be a viable option.
The feature is currently in its early development stages, so ChromeOS users may have to wait a few weeks before experiencing it on their Chromebooks.
