Both user-generated and app-generated data contribute to this issue, along with plenty originating from the operating system itself. If you're facing a similar situation, try out some of the methods shared in this article.
1. Clean Up 'Other Storage'
Windows Phone 8 allows the device's internal storage to expand freely until it's completely full. Only then does the operating system start cleaning up storage space during the next device reboot. If you notice that your 'Other Storage' is too large, you can use the Shrink Storage app to fill up the memory ('Fill Phone Storage'), triggering Windows Phone's automatic cleanup feature immediately ('Clean Phone Storage').
Note: Shrink Storage takes quite some time to run, but the end result is usually satisfactory. It's recommended to let the app start running in the evening before going to sleep to achieve the best cleanup results (as we're less likely to use the phone at that time).

2. Clear Browsing History and Cache
While these types of data don't take up much space individually, it's a good practice to clean them out periodically. To do this, open Internet Explorer on your Windows Phone, tap the menu button at the bottom right corner of the screen (three-dot icon) >
3. Remove System Temporary Files
These temporary files are often used by the operating system to improve performance, and after a while, they become unnecessary. You can clean up these temporary files by going to Settings > Storage Check > Detail > scroll down to Temporary files > Clear. In this area, you can also see which types of content consume how much storage on your Windows Phone device.
4. Remove Unnecessary Apps
Unused apps, especially games, are one of the reasons why our device's storage fills up quickly. You might have installed a bunch of apps for testing purposes but forgot to uninstall them, resulting in wasted storage space. Be ruthless in removing apps you no longer use because you can always download them again from the Windows Phone Store anytime you want. Even for paid apps, there's no need to repurchase; just download them again.
To uninstall an app, simply long-press on the desired app in the installed app list, then choose the 'Uninstall' button. For games, you need to open the Games app (or Trò chơi in Vietnamese), then perform the same uninstallation process.
5. Delete / Store RAW Photos or Refocus, Cinemagraph Images
For Lumia 1520, 1020, 930, or Lumia Icon, merely deleting JPEG images or clearing the photo library isn't enough. Once, I deleted all the photos from my phone, yet the memory was still hogged by something significant. Eventually, I remembered there were tons of untouched RAW photos (.DNG format) on the phone. These are uncompressed original images with much higher resolution than JPEGs, so it's no wonder a single RAW file can take up to tens of MBs. You should copy them to your computer for processing or delete them if no longer needed.
Additionally, you should also pay attention to photos taken with the Cinemagraph or Refocus app on your Lumia device. Files generated by these apps are also quite large. If you've taken many, consider deleting some or transferring them to your computer for storage instead of keeping them on your phone.
To delete or copy RAW files to your computer, if you're running Windows, you can use the Windows Phone app for Desktop mentioned earlier. For those using OS X, you can download the Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac app.
6. Clear OneDrive Temporary Memory
Basically, when you upload photos to OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive), they reside in the OneDrive Camera Roll or Mobile Uploads folder. After uploading, you can delete the saved photos from your device, but Windows Phone still retains these images in Temporary memory (or OneDrive cache) for the next 2 weeks.
This is why some users have higher-than-normal file capacity in Temporary memory and can't delete them using apps like Nokia Storage Check. If you turn off auto-upload, this memory will be less, usually under 50 MB. However, if you upload hundreds of photos to SkyDrive, the occupied memory will be higher.
Of course, Windows Phone automatically clears this temporary memory for you, but if you urgently need free space to copy something important, it can be inconvenient. Instead, you can do it yourself by following these steps:
- Log in to OneDrive on the web at Onedrive.com or use the OneDrive app on Windows Phone;
- Move all files from the Camera Roll or Mobile Uploads folder on SkyDrive to a new folder, with a different name than the 2 mentioned folders;
- Run the Photos Hub app on your Windows Phone to automatically refresh the status of the Albums;
- In your phone's Settings, adjust the date and time forward by at least 2 weeks;
- Open Nokia Storage Check or HTC Make More Space to delete temporary OneDrive files in the Temporary section.
7. Remove Unused Photos, Music, Movies, and Documents
This task might seem overly simple, but not everyone remembers to do it when their phone runs out of space. Over time, a bunch of music, movies, and documents will pile up on your device, while the number of files you actually need is not much. So why not delete them to make room for something else or better?
This deletion process is straightforward; you can do it directly on the phone or plug it into a computer to delete. I suggest using the latter method, connecting to a PC for deletion. This way, you can perform the operation more quickly, and the thumbnails of old files are clearer, reducing the risk of deleting important files by mistake. For Windows users, you need to download the Windows Phone app for Desktop (or use the built-in File Explorer), while Mac users running OS X can download the Windows Phone app.

With the above steps, you can restore and increase the original storage capacity for your Nokia Lumia.
