Among the active lighthouses dotting Vietnam's waters, Cô Tô Lighthouse is hailed for its unparalleled vistas. It's an unmissable destination when exploring Cô Tô Island!
Cô Tô Lighthouse – Offering Vietnam's Most Stunning Coastal Views

Perched atop the largest island in Cô Tô district, Cô Tô Lighthouse stands tall. This beacon is situated at the highest point on Cô Tô Island, approximately 5km from the town center. Standing at a towering height of 118m above sea level, the lighthouse was erected in the late 19th century, becoming a historical landmark in the Cô Tô archipelago.

Cô Tô Lighthouse sits at an elevation of 102m above sea level, with its light reaching approximately 30 nautical miles, equivalent to 60km. Previously adorned with a traditional architecture featuring 72 steps leading to its summit, Cô Tô Lighthouse underwent renovations towards the end of 2017. By the end of 2018, it emerged with a fresh coat of paint, sturdier and more modern.

Presently, the lighthouse is equipped with solar-powered illumination, boasting an automated and self-sustaining control system. Operating on 12V voltage, powered by batteries, and utilizing an energy charging system to keep the lights on, the solar energy setup ensures the beacon remains lit. During winter, the light operates from 17:30 to 6:00 the following morning, while in summer, it runs from 18:00 to 6:00.

Like numerous other lighthouses scattered across the country, Cô Tô Lighthouse serves to signal the position of Cô Tô Island, aiding vessels navigating the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin by providing direction, marking hazardous coastlines or sandbanks, and indicating safe passages into ports for ships. Additionally, the lighthouse plays a lesser-known role in assisting in-flight navigation for aircraft.

The lighthouse stands as a steadfast witness, enduring the test of time amidst the waves and winds, witnessing the myriad changes of Cô Tô Island district. Over the years, despite changes in appearance, this beacon continues to excellently fulfill its mission.
