Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues is a classic beat'em up game featuring two campaigns, Cobra Kai and Miyagi Do. Each campaign allows you to explore the city with a cast of characters from the Cobra Kai dojo and face off against fighters from the Miyagi Do dojo, and vice versa. However, the true ending is only revealed when players complete both campaigns.
The basic process of each level in Cobra Kai involves classic beat 'em up action: fighting through various areas and transitioning to new sections. However, the most appealing aspect is how you achieve this. Drawing inspiration from the Cobra Kai dojo's Strike First philosophy, the Never Stop Attacking combat engine was created. This means no waiting; you can always execute the next attack to take down your opponent. From punches, kicks, grabs, and fiery or icy special moves to attacking opponents on the ground and in the air, leveraging the environment, using unconventional weapons, and even tripping them on the ground. This approach provides players with a truly diverse set of moves that can be used in various creative ways, requiring players to learn about the character, combos, skills, weapons, and overall fighting style. You can also upgrade all attack moves throughout the game.
To add more depth, the developers have introduced concepts from other fantastic games and adjusted them to fit the game, such as the ultimate attacks from Overwatch, time-based skill cooldowns from Assassin's Creed Odyssey, environment-based attacks like in the Def Jam series, combo scaling inspired by Devil May Cry, dodge and defense systems similar to the Souls series, upgrades resembling RPGs like Final Fantasy, short and fun challenges as seen in Bloodstained, a powerful buff system learned from Dead Cells, and, of course, iconic features from classic games of this genre, such as throwing enemies at the screen in Turtles In Time and ground pounds in Combatribes.
Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues channels the fast-paced fighting style of Street Fighter. That's why the game offers a unique, unpredictable set of attacks and combos in the beat 'em up genre. The characters are designed like those in fighting games, meaning there are many interesting concepts from fighting games here, but simplified to provide a less challenging experience. You have various attack styles, and each type brings a specific reward, allowing you to use whatever suits your current situation in that moment.
