As the school year gracefully slips away, eagerly anticipating summer and the melodic buzz of cicadas. We all sense it, painted in the hues of violet through the lens of nostalgia, believing even the phoenix sheds a tear.
Time, in its silent dialogue with the ancient locust trees, unwittingly flips through the pages of life. When the rice flowers exhaust their radiant era, realization dawns that we've gambled away precious time.
(Farewell – Nguyen Phuong Linh)
I wonder when those two verses found their sanctuary in my mind. Every time I witness 10th-grade students embarking on their academic journey, I'm engulfed in a reminiscent reverie of my own self from two years past. Emotions shared by all, standing before the school gate, a collective apprehension for what lies ahead.
Certainly, within each of us, there exist unforgettable moments etched into the fabric of our lives. For me, bidding adieu to the familiar school grounds and stepping into the uncharted territory of a new institution marked a pivotal moment—a gateway to a new chapter in life that remains indelible.
Parting ways with the red scarf, bidding adieu to middle school, the entrance to high school awaits—a surge of anticipation and novelty. It feels as if I'm transported back to the days of stepping into primary school, back to the gates of middle school. That inexplicable sensation, as vivid as ever!
August - the transitional month from late summer to early autumn - a month when clusters of phoenix flowers only sparsely adorn a few belated branches. It's also the month marking my initial steps into high school, embracing the onset of the first lessons.
The gates of high school swung open after three months of summer cramming. This place, to me, was entirely unfamiliar. Everything truly appeared new, from the scenery, the school itself, to the people: a new school, new friends, new teachers, a new learning approach, and even a new environment. Yet, all these elements left behind beautiful memories of the initial sessions. I would have to adapt gradually, acquaint myself because the three years here would shape my destiny. This will be a genuinely challenging journey.
The first day at school was bathed in warm sunlight, the atmosphere gentle and soothing. Following the school's instructions, I had prepared everything needed. But within me, an indescribable emotion continued to stir. Before me now lay a new sky. In the previous school years, after three months of summer break, we returned to the familiar school with trees, stone benches, all imprinted with memories of playful moments with friends. But this year, I stepped into the threshold of high school - an entirely new horizon. The school I attend this year is grand, with spacious surroundings. From the school gate leading to the three-story buildings, a well-paved concrete road. The trees, flagpoles, classrooms, all within my sight, evoked a mix of astonishment and joy.
Afterwards, we were assigned to our respective classes. I secretly wished I could be in the same class as my old friends. But in my class, everyone was a stranger. 'Gradually, I'll get used to them,' I consoled myself. After a few minutes of hesitation, our homeroom teacher entered the class. Her image reminded me of the homeroom teacher in grade 9. Still graceful, with gentle eyes. Her presence somewhat alleviated my anxiety. The first words she spoke were caring instructions about responsibility towards oneself, the school, and the class in academics as well as personal development during the high school years. That was the first lesson I received at this new school.
Selected 10th-grade Model Essays
The most memorable moment for me was the opening day. Clad in white shirts and dark trousers, I presented myself as a true high school student. I felt like I had grown up. The school bell, eagerly orchestrated by the principal, hurriedly urged us to study well. From that moment, I knew I had officially merged into a new environment.
Back when I was little, I dreamed of becoming a high school student. Now, that dream has become a reality. Wearing a new uniform I had never worn before, sitting close to new friends I had never known, and learning from teachers I had just met. As the small dream has come true, within me, new aspirations and dreams are nurtured (graduating high school, passing the university entrance exam, and more). Indescribable emotions surged, a mix of joy and the lingering feeling of longing. Joy because I felt more mature and learned many new things from new lessons, new teachers, and new friends... Images of old teachers and the school of the past surged within me, along with the sincere advice and wishes from everyone on the day of the university entrance exam.
But time, does it ever stop? It silently flows, never stopping. And I will have to strive to hold onto every second and every minute. I must make the most of the 3 years, though seemingly brief, are incredibly crucial for my efforts. Studying in a high school with a rich tradition and achievements, I experience immense joy and pride, mixed with a hint of anxiety. However, what matters to me now is my promise to be determined in studying and training to be worthy of the school's traditions.
This school - Tran Hung Dao High School - is where I paused for three academic years. Though not an extended period, it's enough for us to preserve beautiful memories of this school, our friends, and the teachers here. Perhaps, I will never forget these days - the first days stepping into Tran Hung Dao High School - the gentle August days.
2. Narrate the story of Trong Thuy meeting Mi Chau again after attempting suicide at Loa Thanh well, descending into the aquarium.
Upon awakening, Trong Thuy was astonished to find himself amidst the vast expanse of water. Successive coral reefs obscured the view. Around him, there was only water and lively schools of fish.
Trong Thuy remained bewildered. He reluctantly took aimless steps. However, upon leaving the coral, Trong Thuy was seized by four strange humanoid creatures with shrimp-like heads, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. They tightly bound him and took him to a majestic palace, something he had never encountered on land. The splendid, brightly colored buildings glimmered like jade, filled with guards and attendants bustling in and out. Passing through the ornate door for the fourth time, Trong Thuy was brought to kneel inside the palace. A soldier from the group also knelt down and said:
- Your Highness! Our subordinates apprehended this individual outside the palace gates. It seems he harbors malicious intentions; I request the princess to examine his guilt.
The figure seated above spoke. Trong Thuy heard the voice, sounding familiar, but the person's face was covered, preventing a clear view.
- Hey, you there! Where do you come from to end up lost here?
- Your Majesty, I am but a commoner. Suspicious that my lover might be in the well, I plunged in and got lost, arriving at this place.
- So, what is your name?
- I am Trong Thuy, the son of King Trieu Da.
- We've heard that up on land, you committed numerous crimes against the people of Au Lac, causing them great sorrow. Is that true or not?
Trong Thuy was extremely surprised. Never did he expect a completely unfamiliar person to know all the details of his situation. Realizing denial was futile, Trong Thuy offered an explanation:
- Honestly, I was just following my father, the king's, orders.

- Your house plans to deny the charges, is that it? The person seated on the palace spoke indignantly. Your house pretends to seek peace with Au Lac, asking to marry Princess Mi Chau to await the opportunity to steal the divine crossbow, which is a crime. Furthermore, you sent soldiers to trespass into the southern lands, causing the people to cry out in agony. Not only that, your house heartlessly orchestrated the deaths of King Au Lac and his loyal, innocent wife. With such crimes, whom do you intend to blame?
Trong Thuy turned pale, not knowing who the person on the palace was. Overwhelmed with fear, he bowed his head and confessed:
- Your Highness! I know I have committed grave offenses, but I wholeheartedly love Mi Chau. Night and day, I long to meet her to express my remorse.
- Now that you regret it, what good does it do?
- I know. But in the past, Mi Chau listened to everything I said because she loved me deeply. I deceived her innocent and pure heart, so I feel deep regret. Only after losing her do I realize that, even as the king of Au Lac, without Mi Chau, my life has no meaning. I desperately want to meet her to at least convey my regret.
- Trong Thuy! Lift your head and see who I am.
- It's... Mi Chau!
- Yes, I am Mi Chau. After my death, King Thuy Te showed great compassion and adopted me as his daughter. That's why I am here.
- Mi Chau! I apologize to you. Because of me, you had to endure so much suffering. All these years, my only wish has been to meet you. I am willing to give up everything to live happily with you. Please forgive me.
- I'm glad that you recognize your mistakes. However, we cannot live together. If we do, people will mock us forever. Not living together is a deserved punishment for our enormous mistakes in the mortal realm. I've been waiting for this day for a long time just to say one thing to you: live well in the upcoming days to make amends for what we have done.
As Mi Chau finished her sentence, the magnificent palace suddenly vanished. All around became silent, leaving only Trong Thuy. He sat there in deep remorse, unable to speak. The stain he caused could perhaps only be washed away by the relentless waves of the Eastern Sea.
Trong Thuy sat there for dozens of days and nights. Eventually, he transformed into a stone. After many hundreds of years, someone diving into the East Sea searching for precious pearls still saw a rock-shaped like a mournful person extending both arms as if pleading for something.
3. Analyze the poem 'Nhàn' by Nguyen Binh Khiem.
Nguyen Binh Khiem (1491 – 1585) hailed from Trung Am village, Li Hoc commune, Vinh Bao district, on the outskirts of Hai Phong. He passed the Trang Nguyen examination in 1535 and served as an official under the Mac dynasty. He left a legacy of Han poetry collection 'Bach Van Am Thi Tap' (around 700 poems) and Nom poetry collection 'Bach Van Quoc Ngu Thi' (over 170 poems). Nguyen Binh Khiem's poetry is imbued with philosophical themes, moral teachings, praising the high ideals of scholars, and extolling the philosophy of leisurely living. Simultaneously, it criticizes the vices prevalent in contemporary society.
Nhàn is a Nom poem from the collection 'Bach Van Quoc Ngu Thi.' The title was given by later generations. The poem reads like a profound and heartfelt confession, affirming that the philosophy of leisurely living harmonizes with nature, maintaining a noble character, and rising above mundane achievements.
The first two lines reflect Nguyen Binh Khiem's tranquil and leisurely life:
One dawn, one fishing trip, one fishing rod,
Meditatively, whose soul finds joy in what delight?
Quan Trang's life in the rural village now resembles that of an 'old farmer,' daily companionship with labor tools like a hoe for digging, a plough for plowing, a fishing rod for fishing... The use of counting numbers indicates familiarity and closeness in his life.
The verse transports us back to the simple and rustic life of the 'plowing and cultivating' era (digging wells for drinking water, plowing fields for rice). Despite Quan Trang's dignified appearance, with a high position and abundant prosperity, he suddenly abandons everything to return to a life of 'self-sufficiency.' It is a bold defiance against the societal pursuit of fame and wealth. Bold, yet not arrogant, simply pure, primitive, and genuinely rustic:
Meditatively, whose soul finds joy in what delight?
Essay: Analysis of the poem 'Nhàn' - Selected literary pieces for 10th grade
The phrase 'Thơ thẩn' reflects a skillful expression of a leisurely and relaxed style, portraying the carefree and tranquil mood of individuals who consider themselves distant from a world full of greed, competition, and ambition. Joy manifests in every unhurried step, creating a poetic melody that is gentle, serene, and strangely refreshing. The phrase 'dầu ai vui thú nào' signifies the poet's steadfast stance in the chosen way of life. The word 'ai,' originally a generic pronoun, is employed here with a broad meaning, becoming more intriguing upon reflection.
Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm resigns from official duties and returns to his homeland, which means returning to nature. Living in harmony with nature implies liberation from the competitive cycle of customs, no longer drawn by wealth, status, allowing the soul to find peace and tranquility:
I, foolish, seek secluded places,
Others, wise, venture into bustling realms.
The noble character of Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm opposes worldly gains like water against fire. Seclusion contrasts with commotion, and 'I' contrasts with 'others.' Seeking seclusion does not mean avoiding life but finding a place where one enjoys, lives comfortably, and peacefully, far from the treacherous world of honor and disgrace. A secluded place is where there is no need for schemes and struggles. A tranquil place is where nature is lush, providing relaxation for the soul. The bustling realm is the domain of power, where drums and flags resound, roads are crowded with horses and carriages. Entering the bustling realm means entering the market of profit, fame, and social climbing, a place where people jostle and trample on each other to gain advantages, where dangers lurk around every corner.
Trạng Trình Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm stands as an intellectual with remarkable insight. Insightful in choices: I, foolish, seek secluded places, disregarding: Others, wise, venture into bustling realms. Insightful in playful and witty expressions, paradoxically stating: foolishness, in essence, is wisdom, while wisdom turns into foolishness.
In another poem, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm writes:
Wise and treacherous is wise foolishness,
Foolishness originally gentle, becomes wise foolishness.
(Nôm Poetry)
Thus, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm's perspective of foolishness and wisdom stems from folk wisdom: Good begets good; evil begets evil.
The life of the esteemed sage in Bạch Vân hermitage is rich yet noble, as depicted in seasons fourfold:
Feasting on bamboo shoots in spring, facing rising prices in winter,
Bathing in lotus ponds in summer, plunging into ponds in autumn.
Two verses portray the simple yet delightful rustic activities throughout the four seasons. The poet speaks of daily routines like eating and bathing, remarkably straightforward yet fascinating. In simplicity lies the freedom to live unburdened, unconstrained by societal expectations, free from the pursuit of fame and fortune, liberated from any imposed norms.
Seasonal, rustic dishes like bamboo shoots and rising prices are all products of one's own garden, crafted through personal effort. Eating aside, living and engaging in activities? Quan Trạng now also bathes in lotus ponds and dons clothes like many other rural folks.
As a philosopher with profound wisdom, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm mastered the art of adaptation, comprehending the laws of Nature and society. According to him, the wisdom of a true gentleman is turning away from worldly gains, seeking tranquility for the soul, living harmoniously with pure nature.
The poet's discerning perspective and intelligent gaze are most evident in the final two lines. The poet seeks 'intoxication' to 'awaken,' and he becomes more sober than ever:
Wine, at the tree's roots, we shall drink,
Observe how wealth resembles a fleeting dream.
Quan Trạng reaffirms once again his choice of a leisurely lifestyle. This leisurely life is the result of an extraordinary personality and intelligence. Astute intelligence recognizes that fame, wealth, and power are but fleeting dreams. Enhanced intelligence shapes one's character, making the stance more steadfast, allowing the poet to have the determination to abandon the tumultuous world of fame and gain, seeking the serene and pure nature to nurture the spirit, upholding the values of virtue.
Leisure is a prevalent theme in medieval literature. It is a profound thought and culture of the ancients, especially the intellectual class. Living leisurely harmonizes with nature, aligns with personal cultivation, provides conditions for health preservation, and extends lifespan. Knowing how to live leisurely, finding leisurely pleasures, is a significant philosophical doctrine.
Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm's philosophy of leisure is not aimed at avoiding physical exertion, turning away from society, or only caring for one's own leisurely life. He believes that living leisurely means distancing oneself from power and fame, which he calls the tumultuous world. Leisure is living in harmony with nature, returning to nature for self-cultivation. Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm lives leisurely in body but not in mind, always vigilant about the country's welfare and the people's concerns. Placed in the context of the contemporary feudal society with signs of moral decline, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm's philosophy of leisure carries many positive elements.
The portrait of Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm is quite evident through the leisurely poem. From that simple, rustic portrait emerges the noble personality, the outstanding intellectual beauty of the great Confucian scholar with a timeless reputation.
4. Recount your most profound memory about family, friends, relatives, or teachers.
Each of us has our own past, filled with unforgettable memories. It could be memories with friends, with teachers, or with family, our beloved blood relatives. I have many memories, but one particularly deep memory is the day I took the university entrance exam with my brother Hai.
My brother Hai is a calm and reserved person, not exceptionally bright in studies, but compensates with diligence and hard work. That year, he was in grade 12 preparing for the graduation exam. He applied to two universities, Hue University of Foreign Languages and Danang University of Technology. The intense days spent with books, coupled with the pressure of exams, made him noticeably thinner. With our parents working daily to make ends meet, and me being too young to help with significant tasks, he had to handle everything, from cleaning up to preparing meals for the family. He only had time to study when he wasn't busy. Every night, he stayed up until 2 a.m. to study before finally going to bed. I admire his perseverance and effort, seeing him as my idol...(Continued)

5. Narrate the Story of An Dương Vương and Mị Châu - Trọng Thủy.
An Dương Vương was the king of Âu Lạc, with the given name Thục Phán. He decided to build a citadel in Việt Thường, but the construction faced perpetual delays. An Dương Vương held a ritual, seeking divine assistance. Shortly after, an old man appeared from the east, claiming that a deity named Thanh Giang would come to help the king build the citadel. True to his words, the next day, the king witnessed a Golden Turtle that could speak, identifying itself as Thanh Giang. The king hastily brought it into the city. When asked about the prolonged construction, the Golden Turtle revealed the presence of evil spirits that needed to be eradicated for the citadel to be completed. Subsequently, the Golden Turtle aided An Dương Vương in defeating the evil spirits and constructing the citadel.
In just over half a month, the grand citadel, over a thousand meters high, was completed. Its spiral shape led people to commonly refer to it as Loa Citadel, also known as Côn Lôn Citadel or Devil Dragon Citadel. After three years, the Golden Turtle bid farewell to the king to fulfill its destiny. Before leaving, the Golden Turtle left its claw with An Dương Vương, advising him to use it as a crossbow lever. In case of invasion, he could use it to repel the enemy. Several years later, Triệu Vương, also known as Triệu Đà, invaded with his army. The king used the magical crossbow, and the enemy suffered a devastating defeat, forcing them to retreat and seek peace.
However, Triệu Đà was cunning. He arranged for his son, Trọng Thủy, to propose to Mị Châu. An Dương Vương, considering it harmless, agreed and even allowed Trọng Thủy to reside in the palace without suspecting that he was a spy for the enemy...(Continued)

6. Analyze the Character Ngô Tử Văn in the Story of Chức Phán Sự Đền Tản Viên.
Nguyễn Dữ is a renowned author in medieval Vietnamese literature. His name is closely associated with the fame of the series 'Truyền kỳ mạn lục,' a work considered the 'extraordinary ancient pen' of the national literature. The work, written in Classical Chinese, comprises 20 tales and emerged in the first half of the 16th century, documenting peculiar folk stories. The piece is genuinely a literary creation with Nguyễn Dữ's imaginative, fictional, creative, and refined style, not merely a straightforward recording. With rich imagination and versatile writing, the author of Truyền kỳ mạn lục immerses readers in a mystical world blending humans, deities, illusions, and reality through layers of ethereal, enchanting tales. This world vividly portrays the real aspects of life, where numerous figures wield oppressive power and exhibit greed. Yet, amid the dominance of evil, Nguyễn Dữ also perceives virtues of goodness, honesty, noble souls, and everlasting benevolence. He beautifully depicts these elements, showcasing a real world filled with tyrants and the virtuous. In his work 'Chuyện chức phán sự đền Tản Viên,' Ngô Tử Văn exemplifies the spirit of affirmation, integrity, and the courage to combat evil, safeguarding the people. Simultaneously, it conveys the belief in justice and righteousness prevailing against malevolence.
The main character of the work 'Chuyện chức phán sự đền Tản Viên' is introduced right at the beginning with a brief direct description of name, hometown, temperament, and qualities. Ngô Tử Văn is portrayed as straightforward, honest, resolute, hot-tempered, intolerant of evil. The introduction serves to praise and guide the reader about this character's decisive actions. In the village of Tử Văn, there is a temple of an enemy general who died in battle, rumored to harbor supernatural creatures. Confronted with the defiled temple and the monsters causing harm to the people, 'Tử Văn, furious one day, cleansed himself, prayed to the heavens, and then set the temple ablaze.' While others shook their heads, tongue-tied, fearing to disturb the spirits at the temple, Tử Văn was determined, open, and gracefully took action. He dared to do what others revered, an act of setting the temple on fire.
In the folk belief, burning a temple is an extraordinary event, touching the divine. Tử Văn knew all of this but remained unafraid. Tử Văn's action stems from his nature of 'hating wickedness.' His straightforwardness and boldness led to a courageous act for the people's benefit. Tử Văn's anger is not just for himself but for all the people troubled by malevolent spirits. Therefore, Tử Văn's act of burning the temple is commendable. This action arises from the desire to eliminate demons and protect the people, from Tử Văn's confidence in the righteousness, showcasing the noble character of the knight. It also sparks the beginning of a battle between him and the ghostly spirit of the defeated enemy general.
Essay Analyzing the Character Ngô Tử Văn - Grade 10 Sample Literature
The firmness and boldness of Ngô Tử Văn are also evident in his attitude toward the ghostly spirit of the enemy general. Nguyễn Dữ was truly skillful in creating two contrasting figures: on one side, Tử Văn's straightforwardness, on the other, the deceitful cunning of Bách Hộ Họ Thôi, an enemy general who died in defeat and was forsaken in a foreign land. With no place to rely on, no one to worship him, the wandering spirit of the enemy general seized the temple of the Earth Deity and continued to torment the people. He even schemed to threaten the surrounding deities. When Tử Văn burned the temple, he used Confucian doctrines to accuse and supernatural threats to intimidate. Tử Văn remained fearless; even when challenged by the fearsome power of the ghostly spirit, he stayed composed, unafraid, not succumbing to the threats. This attitude reflects a robust and confident spirit, unwavering belief in righteousness, and the rightness of Ngô Tử Văn's actions.
Declaring war against a formidable and malicious enemy, initially Tử Văn stands alone, but he believes in his actions and the righteousness of his strength. Tử Văn's 'sitting calmly in nature' in the face of enemy threats is not a reckless act of daring but a confident action of one who holds righteousness in his hands. On the other hand, his resilience is demonstrated through gratitude for the guidance of the Earth Deity of Vietnam. Tử Văn, courageous in protecting the people, gains divine support. His question to the Earth God, 'Can he, the enemy, harm me?' is not that of a fearful person but of one wanting the enemy to know him, aiming for victory. Despite the assistance of the Earth Deity in the battle, as one driven from home, unable to fight, 'had to seek refuge at the Tản Viên temple,' 'had to temporarily endure and sit in a place,' can Tử Văn still maintain his faith? Basically, Tử Văn has no positive reinforcement. Meanwhile, his struggle intensifies day by day.
The steadfast character of Ngô Soạn is also evident during the time he is dragged into the underworld. His situation becomes increasingly perilous. The enemy spirit drags him down to the abyss, determined to break his will before Lord of the Dead to claim victory. The underworld is eerie with malevolent demons, a river full of foul-smelling waves. Tử Văn is swiftly taken away by the demons, judged harshly as a 'deeply sinful, not to be included in the reduced category,' charged with additional crimes of defiance. However, he shows no fear, no wavering of spirit, steadfastly calling for justice, demanding a public and transparent trial. Yet, in the realm of the deep palace, he asserts this is no easy feat. When facing the stern Lord of the Dead, Tử Văn struggles to expose the crimes of the deceitful enemy general with unwavering logic, irrefutable arguments, a resolute and strong tone. He defends the truth regardless of his own life, refusing to submit to authority, steadfastly fighting for justice and the right to the end. Listening only to one side, Lord of the Dead, the judge handling the case, the one wielding the scales of justice, at times seems indifferent. Confronted by the law, Tử Văn's strong spirit becomes apparent. Not only does he 'speak loudly,' affirming 'Ngô Soạn is an upright person in the mortal world,' but he also courageously exposes the face of the ruthless enemy general with 'stern, unyielding language.' Amidst the place of justice in the underworld, Tử Văn's character remains forthright, resolute, a determination of iron and stone. He fights to the end for justice. Step by step, Ngô Tử Văn has repelled all counterattacks, resistance of the enemy, ultimately defeating the cunning and malicious enemy general. The result is a triumph over the evil spirit of the enemy general, elucidating the hidden injustice, restoring the position of the Earth Deity of Vietnam, relieving the calamity for the people.
After being vindicated at the trial, Tử Văn returns home, and within a month, Earth God comes to suggest Tử Văn assume the role of a judge at Tản Viên. Earth God says, 'People live in this world; since ancient times, everyone must die, as long as you die and still have a good reputation afterward.' He advises Văn to accept. So, Văn gladly agrees. Accepting a position at Tản Viên temple signifies his victory in the struggle against the cunning demonic spirit. This triumph confirms him as a good, righteous person, willing to fight for justice. A person of righteousness standing up to enforce justice is a profound victory, affirming a certain belief in the triumph of righteousness over evil.
Through an unyielding struggle against evil, Ngô Tử Văn emerges as an upright, resolute, and courageous defender of justice, a stalwart knight of Vietnam. The author Nguyễn Dữ affirms a specific belief in the triumph of righteousness over evil, expressing the spirit of national pride, revealing a determination to fight relentlessly against the bad and the wicked. 'Chuyện chức phán sự đền Tản Viên' successfully blends elements of the virtual and the real. The story is full of mystery due to the appearance of the underworld with ghosts and demonic shadows engaged in extraordinary events: the dead come back to life from the mortal realm to the underworld, from the realm of yin back to yang. But the story seems very real due to detailed leading, providing specific names, hometowns, and times and locations of events. The element of fantasy adds intrigue and allure to the story, making it captivating. The realistic element increases authenticity, giving the story deep social significance.
In summary, the story exalts the character of Ngô Tử Văn – representing the intellectual class of Vietnam: assertive, with a strong and noble personality, rich in national spirit, advocating righteousness, courageous, resolute, daring to fight against evil to protect the people, thereby expressing faith in justice and the triumph of good over evil. Through Ngô Tử Văn's struggle, the story subtly reflects the real world filled with atrocities like bribery, corruption covering up rampant evil, and justice being blinded. The narrative impresses with a series of surreal details, a dramatic plot, sharp character development, and polished, concise storytelling language.
7. The Soulful Beauty of Nguyễn Trãi in the poem 'Summer Day Scene.'
Nguyễn Trãi (1380 – 1442), a national hero, the 'bright-hearted star like Khuê' (as praised by King Lê Thánh Tông), never ceased his heartfelt aspirations for the people and the country in any circumstance. Even when suspected and forced to retreat to the distant homeland of Côn Sơn, he openly expressed his passionate and burning inner thoughts in a life seemingly filled with joy amid clouds, mountains, and nature. This sentiment is vividly revealed in the 61 poems of the 'Bảo kính cảnh giới' collection. Particularly, poem 43 encapsulates numerous aspirations toward life and the people.
'Bảo kính cảnh giới' (Mirror of Self-Reflection) draws lessons from the grandeur of nature to illuminate the poet's heart. We not only encounter the deep love for nature of a great artist but also understand the confessions of a hero always standing by the side of the heartfelt 'national love, people's love.' The poet's contemplation and emotions help us envision a grand personality.
The poem opens with an involuntarily imposed leisurely circumstance:
Then, seeking coolness in the days of schooling.
The peculiar rhythm of the poem extends the feeling of a 'forced leisure': creating emphasis with the first beat, followed by five words forming a poetic breath like a long sigh. Clearly, the poet talks about seeking coolness without providing a truly relaxed sensation. The words 'days of schooling' reveal the tediousness of a long, uneventful day. Leisure without tranquility! Perhaps, it will be the source of countless frustrations unleashed by an involuntary human. However, all suppressed emotions come to a halt when the poet faces a fierce and vibrant nature:
Lush foliage in playful clusters
Thạch lựu hiên still spurting its red essence
The lotus, triumphant, has bid farewell to its fragrance.
The three lines paint a colorful picture of nature, along with distinctive images of the summer space. Firstly, there's a lush foliage spreading its greenery like a giant canopy enveloping the landscape, creating a sense of a verdant space. Nguyen Trai's perspective on nature is always comprehensive, evoking the vitality of the space with the verb 'clustering' and conveying a liberating feeling with the word 'lush.' The view ranges from near to far, following the rule of contrasts in two descriptive sentences, cleverly weaving the red hue of the litchi before the house and the pink shade of the lotus pond. The upper sentence depicts color, the lower one evokes fragrance. This nature also contains a myriad of emotions, sometimes gently diffusing, sometimes bursting forth. Eventually, it leaves a lingering feeling of nostalgia for the faint scent of pink lotus at the end of summer. Only a person with a refined soul can express multiple emotions in just a few concise lines. Amidst this natural scenery, the poet seems to cast off all frustrations, letting his heart blend with the lively nature.
Nguyen Trai not only sees with his eyes but also listens deeply to the myriad sounds of nature:
The bustling fish market in the fishing village
The gentle chirping of crickets in the twilight pavilion.
There's an emotional transformation in the way he listens to the sounds of life. Now, the sounds are felt from a distance, from 'bustling' to 'gentle chirping.' Nature is not silent and gloomy during the evening; instead, it is vibrant and close to the poet's earnest love for life. 'Bustling' is the sound that vividly portrays the peaceful life of the fishermen, the busy scene of trade that is not too noisy to disturb the fragrant space of the poet. It seems like Nguyen Trai proactively directs his heart towards the fish market, the fishing village, to realize that he is not far from ordinary life. The resounding sounds of real life create a connection between the poet and the people, bringing joy and excitement in an evening to offset the poet's melancholy. The contrasting structure creates harmony between humans and nature in the balanced fishing village - the twilight pavilion with a classical, solemn tone. The contrastive art inspires a very fresh inspiration in Nguyen Trai's poetry when the haunting impression is not the dim sunset but the resounding sound of crickets. This unexpected and unique association clearly demonstrates Nguyen Trai's artistic quality. The characteristic sound of summer's cicadas in Nguyen Trai's poetry is like a powerful, vibrant melody, resonating with the fullness of nature's vitality. This vivid natural painting contains a content that touches the aesthetic message, stirring the poet's emotional soul. Does he want to escape from the mundane, gaze at the sunset, confine himself in the pavilion without hearing, without seeing the beauty of nature around? Is nature bustling, or is the poet's heart also eagerly wanting to harmonize with the joy of life? His life is not that of a recluse avoiding life but a reflection of a soul that loves life sincerely, still accepting the pleasure of peaceful life to forget personal sorrows.
Sample essay The Soulful Beauty of Nguyen Trai in 'A Summer Day Scene', Grade 10 Essay
Nature has imparted a profound lesson, awakening the intense desire to return to life within the poet. Nature has ignited the aspirations of the silver-haired hero with an undiminished golden heart:
Playing the zither for a while
The people, wealthy, seek from all directions
What could be more simple, noble, and profound than these sincere, rustic verses! Amidst the stunning nature, Nguyen Trai does not seek leisure for himself. He is not a person solely focused on maintaining purity for himself following Confucian principles of 'solitude in virtue.' Deep in his soul, he remains the 'for the country and love the people' sentiment, the lifelong dedication of a person for the welfare of the people. Nguyen Trai's spirit has not diminished; the flame of his commitment to contribute to the country's peace and prosperity, akin to the idealized society of the Tang Dynasty, still burns. Simplicity and nobility encapsulate Nguyen Trai's heart directed towards the people. Indeed, in his circumstances, there might be many sorrows, but the essence of Nguyen Trai's soul is always 'pure and full of vitality' (words of Prime Minister Pham Van Dong). That fervent soul only desires to bring prosperity to the people. The people's longing for 'no resentment and grief anywhere' is evidence of Nguyen Trai's outstanding, pure character.
'Bao kinh canh gioi' – a profound lesson from nature helps Nguyen Trai reflect, containing a myriad of emotions for life. We recognize an artist's soul - the soldier of Uc Trai. That 'bright as the star Khuê' heart continues to shine until today.
8. Reflection on a Dearest Person.
Thoughts on Dad:
In our daily lives, many people deserve our love and affection. But have you ever thought about who your dearest person is? For everyone, it could be grandparents, parents, siblings, or even friends. As for me, the image of my dad will forever be a sacred flame, warming my soul throughout my life.
My dad hasn't been as fortunate as other men. Throughout his life, he may have never experienced luxury and joy. At the age of forty, barely halfway through his life journey, he had to endure various illnesses: it started with stomach pains and then progressed to multiple complications. In the past, when he was healthy, my dad was always very charismatic.
However, now that beauty seems to have gradually changed: Instead of the robust arms wrapped with muscles, there's only a slender figure. The deep eyes beneath thick eyebrows, high cheekbones emerging on the dark face due to the wind and mist. Nevertheless, illness cannot erase the inner qualities of my dad; he remains a resilient, confident, and wholeheartedly loving family man.
My family isn't wealthy; all expenses depend on the money my parents earn daily. Despite illness and pain, my dad has never surrendered to fate. He strives to rise above the agonizing pain to reassure everyone in the family, working hard as a taxi driver to earn a living.
Every day, my dad has to work from early morning until the sun has long cast its shadow. His hair has gradually turned gray in the morning mist. The job might be easy for ordinary people, but for him, it's challenging and arduous. Now, there are times when he has to drive long distances, and the pains in his stomach resurface.
Reflection on the Dearest Family Member, Grade 10 Essay
Even during days of unpredictable weather – scorching summer afternoons with temperatures soaring up to 38-48 degrees Celsius, or rainy days throughout July and August, and chilly winter nights – my dad persists in standing beneath those trees, hoping for passing customers. I am always proud and grateful to have a father so rich in sacrifice, compassion, and diligence.
But it's not that simple. Standing like that every day takes a toll on him; when he returns, those agonizing pains torment him. Seeing my dad's wrinkled face and the suffering he endures, I can't help but burst into tears. Witnessing him in such a state, my heart aches a hundred thousand times more. Dad, if only I could bear those pains instead of you, if only I could help you earn money, how wonderful would that be? If there's anything I can do to make you happier now, I'll do it all. Can you tell me, Dad?
In those moments, I just want to hold and comfort my dad. I wish he wouldn't go to work anymore. I could quit school, save expenses for the family, and earn money to pay for his medical treatment. But mentioning this would undoubtedly make him sad and disappointed in me.
Dad always says he will keep fighting, fighting until the last ounce of strength, to provide us with education and a better life. He cares deeply about our education. Although he was an excellent student in the past, poverty forced him to drop out. Every evening, even when struggling to move, he tirelessly teaches my siblings and me.
During our family meals, Dad often imparts wisdom on how to live a righteous life. I deeply admire him – he knows thousands of verses from 'The Tale of Kieu,' hundreds of proverbs, and famous quotes.
Hence, I strive to be self-aware in my studies. I aspire to become a doctor, to heal Dad, earn money to support him, and continue his unfinished journey in academia. I am truly grateful to Dad for illuminating a path for me, one brightly lit with knowledge, not shrouded in the darkness of wealth. I will always heed his teachings, taking Dad as my guiding light.
My admiration extends beyond Dad's intellectual prowess; it encompasses his nobility, steadfastness, and optimistic, carefree approach to life. Despite his limited free time, he tends to the garden in front of our house, ensuring it remains evergreen.
Have Dad's orchids ever been deprived of morning water, or his jade orchids ever borne withered leaves? Do the orchids and jasmine ever fail to exude their fragrant scent? Behind it all lies a warm and nurturing hand, not only loving flowers but also caring for animals, a testament to Dad's positive and carefree lifestyle.
In my home, there are always two puppies, a cat, and sometimes Dad brings back beautiful bird cages. Remarkably, throughout more than five years battling illness, I've never heard Dad mention death. However, that doesn't mean he avoids the truth; Dad always confronts the Grim Reaper. He allocates time to do everything before it's too late.
But Dad's life is always filled with suffering. As our family gradually improved and my sisters started earning, Dad left us, abandoning my sisters, my mother, and this family to venture into the unknown. He departed to a place too distant to revisit. Now, when I stumble, I must rise and continue on my own, for Dad is far away, no longer there to support, protect, or encourage me.
Does Dad know how lonely and sad it is here for me alone? Why did he leave me behind? Yet, I am grateful. Dad gave me another lesson: in daily life, cherish what we have, love those around us more, and especially care for our fathers. Forgive Dad when he gets angry and scolds, as he is our dearest one.
Dad departs to another world, where he will be free from illness and escape this painful life. Dad, rest assured, I will always remember your teachings, love, respect, and gratitude. I will live by the bright example you've set for me. Your image will always linger in my heart. The memories and affection you bestowed upon me, I will embrace and cherish—they are the very essence of my soul.
9. Reflection on a Remarkable Piece Studied.
Short Story: Lão Hạc
We have delved into short stories like Lão Hạc, Turn Off the Light, and probably none of us can help but marvel at the artistic talent of Nam Cao or Ngô Tất Tố. Personally, even after reading the short story Lão Hạc by Nam Cao numerous times, it seems that each time I discover something intriguing. It captivates and moves me, at times arousing feelings of resentment and at others evoking deep affection.
Lão Hạc is a product of a noble humanitarian spirit. It is love, admiration, and appreciation for the laborers by Nam Cao. Similar to Ngô Tất Tố and many writers of that era, Nam Cao portrayed the image of pre-Revolution Vietnamese farmers with admirable qualities: diligence, industriousness, rich in love, and sacrifice. Before the revolution, Nam Cao passionately explored the lives and characters of the rural people. In his works, the environment and living conditions of the main characters are often intertwined with poverty, hunger, and societal prejudices, deeply influencing the emotions and perspectives of rural individuals.
Lão Hạc, too, lived a life in poverty and hunger. He spent almost his entire life nurturing his child without ever thinking of himself. He loved his child immensely: when the child couldn't find a wife due to our family's extreme poverty, when the child had to leave the village, leave the homeland to pursue dreams of wealth in the midst of a den of wolves. Reading the story, we witness the agony Lão Hạc endures when he has to sell his only keepsake, Golden Boy. Not selling it would mean not having anything to sustain its life. Life becomes increasingly difficult. Finally, facing his own mortality, Lão Hạc couldn't retain it either. He ate boiled banana stems, ate plain boiled food. However, he thought he 'shouldn't' live any longer. Living more would mean exhausting all the savings for his child. It's truly heartbreaking! Lão Hạc had to arrange his own death. The lives of our farmers before the revolution were stifling to the point of suffocation. Looking at that reality, we feel pain, sorrow. We also deeply hate the landlords, the wicked colonialists.
Lão Hạc dies. His death is a shared destiny, although pitiful, it radiates the noble qualities of a farmer. It evokes both sympathy and admiration for a character rich in self-respect. Lão dies but has resolved not to burden his neighbors even after death by keeping the small garden intact.
Reading Lão Hạc, we realize it's not only Lão who suffers. People like Binh Tư, someone turned into a thief due to poverty. He was a teacher, an educated person, yet couldn't escape the pressures of a torn and hungry family. Poverty compelled the teacher to painfully sell his priceless books. But how many meals could those books provide? So, in the story, everyone is Lão Hạc. Lão Hạc had to sacrifice himself. How long can those others endure?
A prominent theme in Lão Hạc is the writer's belief in the inherent goodness of humanity. However, more importantly, the author's message is a strong condemnation. It rises like a cry to save humanity. From the depths of ideological content, the work speaks of the urgent need for a complete change in the living environment to save genuine and noble human values.
Lão Hạc provides us with a glimpse of the past to appreciate today's life more. It also teaches us that life is not just a simple struggle for survival but also a struggle to preserve human dignity.
10. Analysis of the poem 'Độc Tiểu Thanh kí' by Nguyễn Du.
The theme of women is rarely addressed by modern poets, yet the literary giant Nguyễn Du writes about women with utmost respect and love. Alongside the masterpiece 'Truyện Kiều,' which depicts women in feudal society, the poem 'Độc Tiểu Thanh kí' is an outstanding work in classical Chinese addressing this theme.
Nguyễn Du composed this poem during a diplomatic mission to China for the Nguyễn dynasty. The poem, titled 'Độc Tiểu Thanh kí' in classical Chinese characters, has sparked various interpretations. Some believe Nguyễn Du read stories about the life of Tiểu Thanh, sympathizing with the talented yet ill-fated woman and wrote this poem. Others think Nguyễn Du came across the poetry left by Tiểu Thanh, admiring and pitying her life. Regardless of the interpretation, what stands out is the poet's deeply empathetic and compassionate heart towards life and humanity.
