While both DLP and 3LCD projectors are advanced display methods, neither technology is universally superior for all presentation and entertainment needs due to their individual pros and cons. So, should we opt for a DLP or 3LCD projector?
Overview of DLP Technology

DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a digital display technology that utilizes thousands of tiny mirrors to reflect light. It employs an optical semiconductor chip known as the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) to reproduce the input data. DLP technology utilizes DMD chips, each integrated with thousands of mirrors. Each mirror represents a pixel and rapidly oscillates thousands of times per second. Additionally, it uses a 4-color wheel to generate single-color hues.
Overview of 3LCD Technology

This technology integrates 3 processing chips with the basic colors being red, green, and blue on a single projector. Specifically, it utilizes 3 LCD panels at the system's core, hence the name 3LCD. Each LCD panel consists of hundreds of thousands of very small pixels, resulting in higher resolution with more pixels. The light source is converged through a dichroic prism. At this point, the light source contains all colors, which are then passed through a lens and projected onto the screen. That's the 3LCD technology, which becomes easier to understand when looking at a simulation.
Comparison of Pros and Cons of DLP and 3LCD Projectors
Should You Buy a DLP or a 3LCD Projector?
From a technical standpoint, projectors utilizing LCD technology offer brighter and sharper projected images. So, if your needs involve using a projector for meetings or teaching, it's advisable to purchase models applying this technology. Examples include the Epson EB-S04, Epson EB-X05, and so on.
On the other hand, DLP projectors provide better video quality, making them suitable for watching movies or sports events. Notable products include the Optoma PX689, ViewSonic PA502S, and others.
That being said, with the advancements in technology nowadays, there isn't much difference between LCD and DLP projectors. They have both improved their weaknesses and perform their tasks equally well. So, you don't need to fuss too much about this technology. Instead, focus on your presentation needs, presentation space, accompanying accessories, and most importantly, your budget.
