Xiaomi has been continuously enhancing and developing its 'Ultra' phone line, especially with the launch of Xiaomi 14 Ultra following the resounding success of its predecessor - Xiaomi 13 Ultra. But do the upgrades on the 14 Ultra truly justify the expenditure, or are they merely minor changes that don't make much of a difference? Let's delve deeper into this article to find out!
Design
Both products feature a square-edged design, exuding modernity, sophistication, and elegance. Notably, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is lighter than the Xiaomi 13 Ultra (219.8g compared to 227g), showcasing the company's trend towards optimizing design for a sleeker and more comfortable user experience.
Both feature a curved edge display, with a mole-style design, creating uniformity and refinement. A minor but notable difference is that the screen of Xiaomi 13 Ultra spills over to both sides of the bezel, whereas Xiaomi 14 Ultra is designed to spill over on all four sides, offering a fresher and more distinct identity.
Both these phone models are equipped with a back made of synthetic leather with antibacterial, dirt-resistant, and anti-yellowing properties. However, Xiaomi 14 Ultra has applied a newer material, enhancing abrasion resistance up to 6 times compared to Xiaomi 13 Ultra.
Display
Both of these models feature a 6.73-inch AMOLED display. The screens of both phone models have a 2K+ resolution (1440 x 3200 Pixels), adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, support for DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and other image technologies to enhance and improve display quality. All of these technical specifications serve to create a rich and vibrant viewing experience for users.
However, there's a slight difference between the two flagships, which is the screen brightness. Xiaomi 13 Ultra has a maximum brightness of 2600 nits, whereas Xiaomi 14 Ultra goes up to 3000 nits. This helps the screen of this new generation smartphone display sharper images when used outdoors in bright sunlight conditions.
Camera
For Xiaomi 13 Ultra, the camera utilizes Leica Summicron lenses, with a main 50MP camera, aperture ranging from f/1.9 to f/4.0. The 50MP ultra-wide camera has an f/1.8 aperture with a 122-degree field of view, supporting macro photography from a minimum distance of 5cm. The 50MP telephoto camera with an f/1.8 aperture supports 3.2x optical zoom. The potential 50MP tele camera with an f/3.0 aperture supports 10x optical zoom.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi 14 Ultra also features a quartet of Leica Summilux lenses but with several improvements. The main 50MP camera, with an aperture ranging from f/1.63 to f/4.0. The 50MP ultra-wide camera has an aperture of f/1.8, with a 122-degree field of view but has been fine-tuned from the algorithm to improve shooting capabilities. The 50MP telephoto camera has an aperture of f/1.8, while the potential 50MP tele camera has an aperture of f/2.5.
Both of these models deliver outstanding photo quality, with beautiful and unique images that stand out with the Leica signature. The notable upgrade of Xiaomi 14 Ultra lies in the aperture, aiding better light capture, as well as algorithm enhancements to improve photo and video shooting capabilities.
Additionally, both phones feature a 32MP selfie camera. However, Xiaomi 14 Ultra is capable of recording 4K quality video, surpassing Xiaomi 13 Ultra which records a maximum of Full HD. This results in sharper and clearer video quality from the front camera of Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
Performance
Xiaomi 13 Ultra is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, featuring 1 high-performance core clocked at 3.19 GHz, 4 medium-performance cores, and 3 power-efficient cores. Supported by the Adreno 740 GPU and the company's Loop LiquidCool technology, Xiaomi 13 Ultra undoubtedly delivers a smooth user experience, free from overheating issues during high-performance usage.
Xiaomi 14 Ultra is powered by the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, with 1 high-performance core clocked at 3.3 GHz, 5 medium-performance cores, and 2 power-efficient cores. The Adreno 750 GPU is significantly upgraded and improved, combined with the new Loop LiquidCool technology to cool the entire device and provide a separate thermal loop for the camera, delivering optimal thermal performance for both daily use and professional photography.
Both devices excel at handling various tasks from web browsing, movie watching, high-performance gaming to video editing without lag. However, with upgrades in chip technology and cooling capabilities, Xiaomi 14 Ultra demonstrates a significant improvement in usage efficiency, creating a noticeable difference compared to its predecessor model.
Battery
Regarding battery, both are equipped with a 5000mAh battery. However, Xiaomi 14 Ultra has upgraded its wireless charging capability to 80W, compared to 50W on Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Both feature fast charging up to 90W, providing fast charging capability and reducing waiting time.
Both phone models integrate two chipsets working simultaneously - Xiaomi Surge P2 and Xiaomi Surge G1. The Xiaomi Surge P2 charging chipset optimizes charging efficiency and reduces unnecessary energy consumption, providing a smart and fast charging experience. The Xiaomi Surge G1, an advanced battery management chipset, offers comprehensive care for battery cells, including smart repair functions to extend battery life.
Conclusion
Currently, there is no information on whether Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Ultra will be officially available in Vietnam. Considering the lowest memory version in the domestic Chinese market, I found that 14 Ultra is priced at around 20.95 million VND, which is similar to the launch price of 13 Ultra last year at 20.5 million VND.
Overall, this year's version sees a slight increase compared to the previous one, but this is entirely worthwhile. For those with a good economy, Xiaomi 14 Ultra will obviously be a better choice as both the price and value are proportionate. However, for those with a slightly limited budget, Xiaomi 13 Ultra is still very appealing, especially as its price has been significantly reduced.
