1. UPU Letter 49th Edition 2020 about My Hero - Sending to the United Nations Secretary-General
Hanoi, January 15, 2020,
To Mr. António Guterres, the Current Secretary-General of the United Nations!
Today, I send this letter to you, hoping to convey the message of joining hands to combat human trafficking.
The Essex tragedy with 39 deaths in a cold container is just the painful tip of a colossal iceberg. Only when we see it all can we ask the question: What is the responsibility of those in power?
Dear Mr. António Guterres, the Essex tragedy is just the visible part of the human trafficking iceberg originating from Asia.
Though related nations show efforts and receive international support, it's clear more is needed as human trafficking is veiled in elaborate schemes. Future victims are deceived into voluntary payments or inflated by sensational 'success stories', fueled by rumor mills and flashy role models.
Every year, tens of millions worldwide become victims of trafficking organizations, a new slavery phenomenon in the 21st century. It's a consequence of socioeconomic issues like poverty, domestic violence, social exclusion, lack of education, and the result of conflicts, humanitarian crises, and harsh climate conditions forcing people to leave their homelands to survive. Among the victims, many are women and children, vulnerable to trafficking organizations.
This year, on the International Day against Trafficking in Persons, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, aims to draw attention and commit to children and young people, constituting 28% of total victims, with 20% being young females and 8% young males. The 2018 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report from the United States indicates increasing efforts in this battle but still falls short of meeting complete standards for eradicating human trafficking.
Among the necessary enhancements, there is a definite requirement to increase understanding of the 'promised lands', in this case, the UK, as the 'ideal' destination. It is known that the minimum wage in the UK is around 1,400 euros, while in an A8 country like Hungary, it's only 955 euros (pre-tax), and after tax, it's reduced to 635 euros, according to europa.eu.
During that period, legal migrants from A8 countries mostly had professions and skills, even being well-established in their home countries. Hence, legal migration to the UK was relatively easy to secure new employment, especially in newly opened and understaffed sectors such as nail salons or nursing. Those success stories serve as a driving force for migrants from Asian countries to move to the UK at any cost, forgetting who they are as individuals.
I urge you to implement more policies and take additional measures, especially widespread awareness campaigns on World Day against Trafficking in Persons, to prevent incidents like the tragic death of 39 people.
Hello there!
2. UPU Letter 49th Edition 2020 about My Hero - Footballer Nguyễn Quang Hải
Best regards to you
In our previous correspondence, we enthusiastically discussed Vietnam's triumph in the 2018 AFF Cup. Did you ask about my favorite player? If we're talking about the most impressive one, undoubtedly, many would mention Quang Hai—the hero of Vietnam's football fans during that era.
Quang Hai brings to mind skillful ball handling, inspirational and endlessly creative plays, alongside his powerful left-footed shots and impeccable free-kick abilities. On the journey to the recent AFF Cup championship, we'll also remember instances where Quang Hai was repeatedly fouled by opponents. However, he would fall but rise again, displaying remarkable resilience. Quang Hai's toughness likely played a crucial role in his early entry into professional football. After training at the Hanoi Youth Football Training Center and later at the Hoang Anh Gia Lai - JMG center, alongside peers like Cong Phuong, Van Toan, and Van Thanh, Quang Hai matured on all levels.
I vividly recall being impressed by Quang Hai during U19 Vietnam's run to the semifinals of the 2016 U19 Asia Championship. Later, my admiration grew during the U20 World Cup 2017, where Quang Hai and his teammates showcased their talents on the world stage, despite our early exit. In that tournament, Quang Hai's shot hitting the post against U20 Honduras was perhaps his most memorable moment, marking the emergence of a new star in Vietnamese football at the age of 20.
Not long after, Quang Hai was called up to the national team for the Asian Cup qualifiers, scoring his first goals. In 2018, Quang Hai became a key figure in Coach Park Hang-seo's squad, achieving magical feats in competitions like the U23 Asia Championship, ASIAD, and the AFF Cup. None of us will forget Quang Hai's snow-covered goal in the U23 Asia Championship final, along with his outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
Quang Hai's stability contributed to Vietnam's triumph in the AFF Cup, rightfully earning him the Best Player award. At Hanoi FC, Quang Hai has long been a pillar, delivering numerous 'masterpieces' in the national championship. I also greatly admire Quang Hai in this aspect.
You probably agree that Quang Hai is currently Vietnam's top player, and I believe he will achieve new heights in the future. Personally, I find Quang Hai to lead a stable life, maintaining a positive public image; this further earns my admiration. Quang Hai is not only my idol and hero, but likely a hero for many young people as well, instilling a strong belief that you can overcome limits, especially those set by yourself, in a perfect way.
What are your thoughts on Quang Hai? Write back to me soon.
I'm waiting.
