Throughout our national history, Vietnam has experienced thousands of years of nation-building and defense against foreign invasions. Whenever our country was invaded, we witnessed the emergence of heroic figures leading the people in uprisings against the invaders. And one of the most impressive figures is the Great General Tran Hung Dao - who made significant contributions in three resistance wars against the Mongol - Yuan invaders.
Tran Hung Dao was born in a turbulent period of the Tran dynasty. He was known for his intelligence, extensive knowledge, proficiency in both literary and martial arts, patriotism, and loyalty to the nation. He was a brilliant strategist who made significant contributions to the third resistance war against the Mongol - Yuan invaders. Despite suffering defeats twice under Dai Viet's command, the Mongol - Yuan army remained determined to invade our country for the third time. Faced with this situation, the people of the Tran dynasty, under the leadership of King Tran and General Tran Hung Dao, united in rebellion. To fully prepare for the resistance war, Tran Hung Dao mobilized regional lords, built ships, and recruited soldiers. After the reorganization of the army in mid-1287, he appointed Tran Nhat Duat and Nguyen Khoai, along with Tran Khanh Du,... to defend each locality, while he himself defended the capital Thang Long. When the enemy forces from the South crossed our borders, Hung Dao led attacks and defenses in major battles such as the Battle of Van Don and the Battle of Bach Dang. He also accurately predicted the enemy's intentions and instructed our troops to plant stakes in the Bach Dang River, leading to the destruction of a large portion of their naval forces. Thanks to his military prowess and strategic acumen, he completely expelled the Mongol - Yuan army from our territory, with many enemy generals killed or captured.
Today, from North to South, we can find many statues of him in Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, or Ho Chi Minh City. There is a statue in Nam Dinh cast in pure copper with a weight of up to 21 tons, and a statue height of 10.22 meters. Additionally, the temple of Hung Dao Vuong continues to burn incense daily to commemorate his great contributions and show reverence for this national hero.
With his contributions, Tran Hung Dao remains a national hero, a military genius who defeated the Mongol - Yuan invaders three times. He has made great contributions to the country and serves as a shining example for future generations to follow.
