Composing the narrative of the Nam Xuong girl on page 51 of the Literature 9 textbook volume 1
COMPOSING THE NARRATIVE OF THE NAM XUONG GIRL MODEL 1:
Summary:
Vũ Thị Thiết (Vũ Nương) possesses both physical and inner beauty. Despite Trương Sinh's lack of education, he becomes jealous and marries her. While Trương Sinh goes off to war, Vũ Nương diligently cares for her mother-in-law and raises their child. When tragedy strikes with the death of her mother-in-law, she handles it with grace. Trương Sinh returns, devastated by the news of his mother's death. Misunderstandings arise, fueled by jealousy, leading Vũ Nương to tragically end her own life by jumping into the river.
Phan Lang, grateful for saving Linh Phi, encounters Vũ Nương. Despite Trương Sinh's efforts to clear her name, Vũ Nương, due to the harsh feudal society, never returns to the mortal world.
Question 1 (page 51 of Literature 9 Textbook Volume 1):
Structure:
- Part 1 (from the beginning ... mocked by everyone): the injustice and death of Vũ Nương.
- Part 2 (the rest): Vũ Nương in the water dungeon and the resolution of the injustice.
Question 2 (page 51 of Literature 9 Textbook Volume 1):
Character Vũ Nương in different circumstances:
- Before marrying Trương Sinh: gentle, graceful, and beautiful.
- During her husband's absence: a devoted wife and caring mother.
- When her husband goes to war: a dutiful daughter-in-law, a faithful wife.
- Falsely accused: she maintains her innocence but resorts to drowning herself to preserve her honor.
→ Vũ Nương is a virtuous woman, a loyal wife and mother, a filial daughter-in-law, and a woman who values morality and honor.
Question 3 (page 51 of Literature 9 Textbook Volume 1):
Vũ Nương suffers injustice because:
- Direct cause: Trương Sinh, influenced by a naive child's words, becomes suspicious and jealous.
- Deep-rooted causes:
+ Patriarchal and Confucian societal norms.
+ The unjust war causing separation.
→ The status of women is diminished, overshadowed by men.
Question 4 (page 51 of Literature 9 Textbook Volume 1):
The story unfolds chronologically, intricately weaving plot points. The opening sets the stage for the climax (Trương Sinh's lack of education and jealousy make him easily believe the child's words, leading to suspicions and false accusations). The narrative tone is objective, and dialogues are surprising, vividly depicting the characters' psychology. The story reaches a dramatic peak.
Question 5 (page 51 of Literature 9 Textbook Volume 1):
- Fantastical elements in the story:
+ Phan Lang's dream, Phan Lang and Vũ Nương under the turtle cave.
+ Vũ Nương appearing on a flower carriage, flags waving, and a vibrant net hammock full of river, with her 'shadow fading away gradually.'
- The fantastical elements create an enchanting, imaginative world. It reflects the dream of a just society for the people.
