Many Genshin Impact gamers are growing anxious about their future in the game.
miHoYo's games, from Genshin Impact to Honkai: Star Rail, always captivate a massive player base, rapidly achieving success upon release. Besides the engaging content and gameplay, the key strength of these blockbusters lies in being completely free, allowing gamers easy access. This is the main reason millions of players flock to miHoYo's titles. However, this might change in the future.
The issue arises as Unity, a leading game development platform, recently made a significant change. Starting January 2024, the platform will implement pricing for each download, charging game developers using Unity as their platform. If the download count surpasses a certain threshold, developers will have to pay up to $0.2 per download thereafter. Despite negative reactions and disagreements from game development studios, Unity made this decision unilaterally.
The concern lies in the fact that miHoYo's popular titles like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail both utilize Unity for development. Therefore, the policy change from Unity has raised worries that in the future, Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail may become paid games for users, inevitably causing miHoYo to grapple with additional expenses to cover Unity fees starting next year.
However, there is also positive information that both of miHoYo's games are built on a Unity version specifically tailored for the Chinese market in a previous $1 billion deal. Therefore, whether miHoYo has to pay fees for the next year remains a question mark. Even in that case, it is not certain that this game developer will implement charges for Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail.
