While Nha Trang is renowned for its coastal beauty, it also boasts mountains worthy of exploration. Co Tien Mountain is a cluster of three adjacent peaks located to the north of Nha Trang city. With an average height ranging from 300m to 400m, Co Tien Mountain offers a panoramic view overlooking Nha Trang city and its beaches.
Where is Co Tien Mountain located?
Co Tien Mountain is situated in Vinh Hoa ward, Nha Trang city. To reach the parking area for mountain climbing, you can take Tran Phu Street from the city center straight to Pham Van Dong Street. After passing Hon Chong beach, turn left onto Ngo Van So Street. Along this road, there are many convenience stores specialized in parking services for mountain climbers.
At present, no tourism company has ventured into exploring Mount Fairy, so most mountain climbers are self-guided. You'll only need around 10,000 VND for parking, and there are no other fees involved. The trail up the mountain is relatively easy, but if you're going alone, you should still be cautious about safety and health. Remember to bring enough water and snacks, and make sure to carry your trash back down the mountain.
Mount Fairy - Nha Trang
When is the best time to climb the mountain?
Nha Trang is a coastal city, and despite the sea breeze, it can get very hot and sunny around noon. With sparse vegetation on Mount Fairy, choosing the right time to climb is crucial. It's advisable not to ascend when the sun is high up as it can be scorching.
Mount Fairy has 3 peaks, and it takes an average person between 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the summit. It'll require about 3 to 4 hours to conquer all 3 peaks (including the ascent and descent). However, the view from the first peak alone offers a breathtaking panorama of Nha Trang city and its stunning beaches.
There are 3 memorable times to conquer Mount Fairy:
Morning on Mount Fairy
If you have the time, you can combine mountain climbing with sunset viewing in the evening, then camp on the mountain to admire the city lights, and wake up in the tent at dawn to welcome the sunrise. You can climb Mount Fairy throughout the year, except on rainy, windy days, and during scorching heat.
My journey to conquer Mount Fairy's first peak
I didn't have time to camp overnight on the mountain, and if I climbed to watch the sunset, it would be dark by the time I descended. Since this was my first time climbing Mount Fairy, I chose to go in the early morning when it's cool and the path is clear.
On Thursday morning, I rode my motorbike to Ngô Văn Sở street, where only Aunt Bình's grocery store was open. There were only a few motorbikes there, indicating few mountain climbers, very different from the crowded weekends. I followed Aunt Bình's directions to the foot of the mountain and started climbing at 5:40 a.m. My goal was to conquer the first peak, with over 1 liter of water and a loaf of bread for breakfast.

Suburban Nha Trang in the early morning
At the beginning of the journey, the path was quite steep. I followed the existing trail, surrounded by sparse vegetation. At this time, the sun was just rising from the mountain peak in the east. Climbing a bit higher, I could see the city's yacht pier. The upper part of the mountain is mostly covered with low bushes, with occasional tall trees providing shade for resting. I had breakfast and continued climbing.
After breakfast, I climbed a bit further and began to observe Nha Trang city. As I hadn't ascended much, I could easily spot the line of hotels along the coast, and even Ba Lang church. The city stretches all the way to the foot of the low mountains. Interestingly, even on the mountain, I could still hear the morning announcements from the suburban neighborhoods clearly.
The soil on Mount Fairy is a very fine white soil that easily sticks to clothes. Those wearing dark pants will find the white soil clinging like powder to every crease. With this type of soil, the mountain trail becomes quite slippery on rainy days.

The final steep slope of the first peak
Approaching the first peak, I had to hurry through a stretch of bare mountain without any trees. Around 7:00 a.m., I reached the first peak, marked by a flag. From the first peak, gazing down, you'll see the charming city of Nha Trang nestled beside beautiful beaches, with distant hills faintly visible in the morning sun. The morning breeze was refreshing; I found a shady spot under a tree and sat there for a long time, enjoying this breathtaking scenery.
From the first peak, you can easily find the trail to conquer the second and third peaks. Even before 7:00 a.m., it was already sunny on the mountain. If you intend to climb the remaining peaks, you must start around 4:00 a.m. to avoid exhaustion from the heat. The path to the second peak seems very steep, while the journey to the third peak is comparatively easier. Standing on the first peak, you can not only admire the cityscape but also marvel at distant mountain ranges and distant bays.

For me, Nha Trang is a place where all the elements that enchant tourists converge: majestic mountains, captivating seas, and bustling cities. A short hike up Mount Fairy allows me to admire the entire city while witnessing the vast blue sea and rolling mountains. Take a trip to Mount Fairy once to understand why many locals in Nha Trang gather there every weekend to watch the sunset, camp, and then watch the sunrise again.
