II. Sample Essay Reflecting on the Concept of Compassion
Compassion is a sublime and sacred realm that brings happiness and reverence to anyone, regardless of their social status or place of residence. Being fortunate to be born and raised, humans can only reach completeness by learning to love others, understanding and resonating between harmonious hearts.
Love and compassion are perceived as genuine emotions between people, sincere feelings that genuinely desire to offer caring gestures, wishing for the happiness and joy of others. There are no boundaries that confine compassion; it could be the love between children and parents, the respect between students and teachers, the empathy and sharing with the unfortunate homeless, or the affection for long-time pets in the family. No one can grasp or measure love and compassion, but they are real emotions, existing only when humans have a soul and thoughts. A cup of orange juice from a mother supporting you during challenging exam days, a warm hug from a long-lost friend, a comforting phrase along with a warm meal for a destitute beggar on the sidewalk, or a tear rolling down when watching a touching movie... That is compassion, simple and close but immeasurable.
Being lucky to be born, we have the love among those who share the same bloodline, always welcoming us back. When going to school, we have the opportunity to expand relationships, friendships, teacher-student relationships, which are sturdy luggage for us to confidently step on the challenging path of life. Love between hearts beating in unison, comradeship, sharing difficulties, the sacred parent-child love when we start our own families... Expanding further, compassion is harmony. In the past, the great poet Nguyen Du once questioned whether anyone in the world could be harmonious, in tune with oneself or not, through the verse: 'Three hundred years later, who knows/ The world, who would weep for To Nhu?' On the occasion of commemorating the 200th anniversary of this great poet's birth, poet Huy Can wrote 'Remembering To Nhu' to memorialize and express love, respect, and a soul resonating throughout generations. Compassionate hearts may be simple at times, and at other times, they are grand and magnificent like the love for the nation, the spirit of the Vietnamese people. 'Love the Vietnamese people, red blood, yellow skin,' compassion spreads to the entire community, the whole nation living on the beloved S-shaped land.
Love does not require any specific cause or reason. 'No one can define love,' love is when we feel compassion seeing an elderly person sitting alone by the roadside begging for food, when we are moved by the tears of joy of a mother reunited with her lost son, or when we anxiously await the late return of our loved ones. Some turn love into action, like organizing donation drives for clothes, books, and study materials for people in flood-prone areas. The project 'Meat in the Rice' organized by young people aims to provide nutritious meals to children in remote areas, a true expression of compassion. Many subsidized houses and sturdy bridges have been built with the support of benevolent individuals to help those in poor villages. Though quietly devoted, compassionate love is the foundation of all humanitarian actions, worthy of recognition. Someone with empathy, understanding, and sharing, regardless of social status, is undoubtedly a reliable person. Our elders used to say, 'good leaves protect tattered leaves,' advising future generations to show love for humanity, to help others in need. Compassion is the sustainable link within a community, creating a humane society with compassion.
While we enjoy daily meals and clothing, outside, many less fortunate individuals are struggling to find a meal. Poor orphans are born without the love of parents, and elderly people have no place to lean on. It is truly sad that humans are becoming indifferent to their own kind. Some even willingly harass and drive away elderly vendors, thinking they are dirty and detrimental to them. Faced with pitiful situations, they gradually develop selfish, narrow-minded thinking, unwilling to open their hearts to help anyone. Do they think that one day when they are no longer able to work and unfortunately fall into dire straits, who will help them through the hardship?
As global citizens, we need to balance the integration of information technology and preserve the precious qualities of the soul. Compassion, a shining gem in the heart of each individual, should be nurtured by doing good deeds, loving those around us, and always helping others to the best of our ability. Simultaneously, each individual must strongly condemn those isolating themselves in a shell of apathy, gradually making them feel compassion, humanizing them through humanitarian actions. Only in this way can humans develop comprehensively, deserving the position of being the rulers in the ecosystem.
A tree seedling only grows when nurtured, and love only lasts when spread. Give love to receive love; compassionate hearts are the standard for evaluating human character. Living with love today, you will undoubtedly receive love in the not-too-distant future.
