The production team of Seven Colors Rabbit animated film has considered refunding the money to fans if the fundraising period fails to meet its target. As of 14 days before the project ends, the amount of support for the new project is equivalent to 50% of the goal.
With the aim of producing quality Vietnamese animated films for the Vietnamese audience, author Huynh Thai Ngoc and the team at Sun Wolf Animation Studio embarked on the production of the multi-episode animated film Seven Colors Rabbit with funding from community mobilization, a form not new but previously no unit in Vietnam has successfully achieved the billion-dollar mark.
Fundraising started on November 15, 2022, and lasted until February 22, 2023, aiming to raise funds of 1.2 billion dong to produce the first 3 episodes of the animated series. The series is expected to have 10 episodes with a duration of over 120 minutes.
Sharing with us, Nguyen Tien Son - the producer of the Rabbit project, recounts the success story of this community-funded project.
Until February 7, 2023, 14 days before the end of the project, the amount of support Seven Colors Rabbit received was only equivalent to 50% of the plan. The production team has considered the worst-case scenario and announced two options for those who have donated:
- Option one is to refund the donated amount.
- Option two is if people continue to support, based on the amount after refunding those who want their money back, the Rabbit team will calculate the budget for gifts (for those who donated) and produce the number of episodes based on the available funds (estimated budget: 400 million VND per episode).
The Rabbit animation production team also demonstrates determination, although lacking sufficient funds for the entire series production, they will try to find alternative solutions to launch the film as planned.
On February 17, 2023, five days before the deadline, the amount of support received by the team equals 65% of the proposed target.
'At this point, the animation is still far from realization', Tiến Sơn said.
On February 20, 2023, the donation amount suddenly surged. Particularly, two generous contributors made significant donations of 250 million VND and 100 million VND respectively. These contributions came from Coolmate, a brand under Fastech Asia LLC, and W2WCartoon, a YouTube channel specializing in animated film reviews, which have supported the Rabbit project as the deadline approaches.
'This is entirely donation money from the brand, without any accompanying advertising requirements for the upcoming 3 episodes of Thỏ Bảy Màu. Alongside the love of many Thỏ fans, as of 4:20 PM on February 21, 2023, the Rabbit team has received support from 4,955 donors, totaling 1.374 trillion VND (rounded), equivalent to 114% of the target,' Tiến Sơn added.
'We are delighted and would like to express our gratitude to all those who have cherished and supported Thỏ Bảy Màu and the dream of producing Vietnamese animated films for the Vietnamese people. Now, let's get started on producing the first 3 episodes according to the plan,' shared Nguyễn Tiến Sơn, representative of the Rabbit Bảy Màu production team.
This also marks the first successful community-funded animated film in Vietnam.
When asked about the plans for the remaining 7 episodes in the planned 10-episode series, Tiến Sơn stated that he and the Rabbit Bảy Màu production team will seek other avenues for funding. This may include seeking sponsorship from brands, finding investors, or 'short-term gain for long-term investment' by producing commercial products, advertisements to fund the dream of making animated films.
