Enhance your home network speed by using an Ethernet cable, turning off the microwave, or disconnecting from unused devices...
1. Coping with Covid-19: Tips for Accelerating Internet While Remote Working
One of the primary concerns when working from home is internet speed. It could be slow due to multiple simultaneous users or inefficient device optimization within your home.
Here are some straightforward tips to boost your internet speed while working from home.
Turn off the microwave
Wi-Fi and microwaves operate on the same frequency, significantly impacting transmission speed. Turn off the microwave before an upcoming online meeting or an important call.
Position the Wi-Fi router correctly
The router should be placed in a high location, free from obstruction by walls or other electronic devices, such as refrigerators or air conditioners. Users should also avoid placing the router on the ground or near multiple devices simultaneously. According to Ofcom: 'Smartphones, halogen lights, dimmer switches, loudspeakers, computers, TVs, and monitors can all affect Wi-Fi speed if they are too close to the router'.

Turn off Wi-Fi connections for unused devices
Ofcom also notes that devices like tablets and smartphones continue to access Wi-Fi even when not in use. Completely disconnecting them not only frees up bandwidth but also extends device battery life.
Use an Ethernet cable
Ethernet cables often provide a stronger and more stable connection than Wi-Fi. However, on many newer laptops, users may need an adapter to directly plug in an Ethernet cable.
Use a landline phone
Ofcom also recommends using a landline phone for important calls. Alternatively, Wi-Fi can be utilized with reliable apps such as Skype, FaceTime, or WhatsApp. Using mobile data for calls can be expensive and may experience interruptions if data runs out.
