A beacon is a light that shines straight up into the sky, extremely challenging to craft. Therefore, crafting a beacon is a great way for you to show off your Minecraft mastery. Read the article below to learn how to craft a beacon in Minecraft.
I. Essential Materials for Crafting a Beacon in Minecraft
Beacon is a precious item in Minecraft, so you will need to make a real effort to craft it.
Next, you'll need to mine Obsidian. Obsidian isn't too difficult to find, but you'll need to use a Diamond Pickaxe to mine it.
When you find an obsidian pool (on the surface or underground), simply pour water so that it flows onto the obsidian. The combination of these two elements will create Obsidian.
3. Metal Blocks
The metal blocks I'm referring to are Iron Blocks, Diamond Blocks, Gold Blocks, Emerald Blocks, or Netherite Blocks.
While you don't need metal blocks to craft a beacon, they're essential for building the pyramid. At minimum, you'll need 9 Iron Blocks, but the more, the better.
4. Obtaining the Nether Star
Lastly, the Nether Star – a rare item only obtained by defeating the Wither boss. The Wither doesn't spawn like a regular mob; you'll need to summon it yourself.
Step 1: Enter the Nether by creating Nether Portals.
Step 2: In the Nether, mine at least four blocks of Soul Sand. This is a grayish-brown sand found on the surface of the Nether.
Step 3: Next, seek out the Nether Fortress to fight Wither skeletons. These are black skeletons wielding swords instead of bows, much stronger than regular skeletons. Upon defeat, they have a 2.5% chance of dropping a skull. You'll need a total of 3 skulls.
Step 4: Once you have all the materials to summon the Wither, you should return to the Overworld to summon it. Arrange the Soul Sand into a T shape, then
Step 5: When the Wither appears, quickly run away from it. As it charges up to full health, it will create a massive explosion around it.
After the explosion, you begin the fight to defeat it, so use a variety of weapons and employ suitable tactics. Stay really focused!
Step 6: Once the Wither is slain, it will drop a Nether Star. Your remaining task is simply to pick it up.
II. Crafting a Beacon in Minecraft
With all the necessary materials, crafting a beacon is straightforward. Just go to the crafting table and add:
- 3 Obsidian at the bottom
- 1 Nether Star in the middle
- Fill the remaining slots with glass
And that's how you get a beacon. However, on its own, it'll be useless. To shoot a beam of light into the sky and harness the true power of the beacon, you'll need to place it atop the Beacon pyramid.
III. Crafting the Beacon Pyramid
A beacon will only activate when placed on the Beacon pyramid. To build this pyramid, you'll need Iron, Gold, Emeralds, Diamonds, or Netherite (as mentioned above). You can use just one or combine all 4 of these resources at once when constructing the Beacon pyramid.
The beacon can be upgraded to a maximum of 4 levels, each level providing more power.
- Level 1: A single layer of 3x3, totaling 9 blocks.
- Level 2: Bottom layer 5x5, top layer 3x3, totaling 34 blocks.
- Level 3: Bottom layer 7x7, middle layer 5x5, top layer 3x3, totaling 83 blocks.
- Level 4: Bottom layer 9x9, next layer 7x7, near-top layer 5x5, top layer 3x3, totaling 164 blocks.
Once you've constructed the surface of the Beacon pyramid, place the beacon on top, it will be activated immediately. Here's an example of a Level 1 Beacon pyramid:
And the Level 4 Beacon pyramid…
IV. Utilizing beacon to enhance power in Minecraft
Once the beacon is activated, right-click on it to open the power upgrade menu.
First, you need to select the power you want to use in the Primary Power frame (1) and Secondary Power frame (2). Then, you add any metal ingot into the empty slot (3) and press the ✔ mark (4).
You'll then receive the power depending on the type you choose:
- Speed: Increases movement speed
- Haste: Increases mining and attack speed
- Resistance: Reduces almost all types of damage
- Jump Boost: Allows higher and farther jumps
- Strength: Boosts melee weapon damage
You should note that these buffs only affect within a certain range depending on the Beacon level. A Level 1 Beacon limits to 20 blocks, while a Level 4 Beacon extends to 50 blocks. Once out of range, the power boost will fade after 10-15 seconds.
If you choose one power but then change your mind and want to select another, simply return to the Beacon and add another ingot. To activate all powers simultaneously, you need to create a large Beacon pyramid and place 6 beacons on top of it.
The sizes of Beacon pyramids are as follows:
- Bottom layer: 10x11
- Next layer: 8x9
- Next layer: 6x7
- Top layer: 4x5
V. Changing beacon colors
Simply place a Colored Glass Pane on top of the beacon, it will change the light to the color of the glass.
To make colored glass, arrange 1 dye in the center and 8 glass panes around. Then, go to the Beacon, hold Shift to crouch and place the colored glass onto the beacon.
