String figure crafting has been a cherished pastime for generations, enjoyed by individuals of all ages across the globe. It's an immensely enjoyable activity! If you've successfully created the Cup and Saucer, crafting the Star is just a couple of steps away!
Steps
Create the Cup and Saucer using either a short string loop or a regular-sized loop that's been doubled.
Position your hands with fingers pointing upward. Focus on the center of the figure where the cup rests on the saucer. This segment comprises three strings: two crossed strings leading to the near side of the forefingers, and the other looping around the far forefinger/far thumb strings.
Gently grasp the upper straight string with your pinky fingers as demonstrated.
Loosen the strings on your thumbs.
Slide your thumbs over the nooses on your forefingers and secure the nearby strings with your little fingers. Allow the slack string to pass over the strings being pulled back by your thumbs.
Release the looped string from your right pinky finger.
Completion.
Handy Pointers
- To gauge the ideal string length for your hand, grip one end of the string between your thumb and palm edge, then wrap it loosely around your palm (excluding the thumb) about 8 times. Cut the string and securely fasten the ends together.
- Craft stores offer braided nylon string alternatives. Certain figures turn out better with a thin, smooth string, while heavy-test braided nylon fishing line is also effective. A thicker nylon string is also readily available and suitable.
- You can initially secure the string with a square knot (avoiding a granny knot), then trim the ends. However, for a knot-free string loop, consider an alternative method.
