Crafting Stories: Recounting Character Actions, short 1
I. Observations
1. Read the following story:
The Ungraded Essay
- Have you ever seen an ungraded essay before, have you?
I was surprised:
- Was the topic difficult?
- No. The teacher just asked to 'Describe your father reading the newspaper.' One of my classmates said his father doesn't read the newspaper, but then he made up a story and still got 6 marks.
I sighed:
- And the one who got ungraded, how did he describe?
- He didn't describe, didn't write anything at all. He handed in a blank paper to the teacher. When the papers were returned, the teacher was very angry. She asked: 'Why didn't you do the assignment?' He remained silent for a long time. Only later did he say: 'I'm sorry, teacher, I don't have a father.' When she heard him, the teacher was shocked. It turned out his father had sacrificed himself since he was born. The teacher was new to the class, so she didn't know, sir, everyone in the class felt sad. On the way home, someone asked: 'Why didn't you describe someone else's father?' He just bowed his head, tears streaming down his cheeks.
The story of the student with an ungraded essay left me with a pain, but also taught me a lesson about honesty.
