Question 1 (page 23 Vietnamese Language 4 textbook):
What is the function of the colon in each of the following sentences?
a) I sighed.
- Did the kid who got zero marks, describe anything?
- He didn't describe, didn't write anything. He handed in a blank paper. When the papers were returned, the teacher was very angry. She asked: 'Why didn't the kid do the work?'
Hint: The colon indicates that the part of the sentence after it (the part with the underline at the beginning) is the words of the character 'I' and a quotation from the teacher (combined with double quotes)
b) Under the wings of dragonflies then were green bamboo hedges rustling in the wind, the pond's edge with clusters of trembling water plants. Then the beautiful scenes of the country appeared: the fields with herds of buffalo grazing, the river with boats going up and down
Answer:
The colon marks the part after it as things, events (listing landscapes ... illustrating the content 'the beautiful scenes of the country')
