Answering questions (page 127 Textbook)
1. The inclination to show off is the desire to flaunt one's wealth or anything new, showcasing it for everyone to admire. This trait reflects a demonstration of affluence to gain admiration. Boasting can be subtle or overt, like the guy with the joyful pig and fresh attire in the story. In life, similar instances of boasting occur. Examples:
- Someone returns from abroad with a beautiful new outfit. They wear it to an important office meeting, not mentioning the new outfit. Yet, everyone knows the trip abroad provided them with a nice garment (this is a subtle, economic way of boasting).
- Someone attends a meeting, and when asked about work, they divert to their overseas trip with a dignified reception, unrelated to their job (this is an overt way of boasting). . .
- A friend gets a new bike from their mom. Excitedly, they show off the bike to their friend, saying it helps them get to school on time (this is innocent boasting).
2. The guy goes looking for his boastful pig in a situation where he has a wedding and a pig destined for slaughter is alive. Ideally, he should ask people: 'Have you seen my pig running around here?' If asked about the pig's details, he should answer: 'What color is the pig? How many pounds?' In reality, people would only care about the pig's appearance, not whether it's a wedding pig or for some other purpose. Boasting about a new outfit, he stands at the door, waiting for someone to praise him. If no one comes, he gets upset. In response to the question 'Did you see the pig here?' he flaunts his new attire, an inappropriate gesture for the question. In his response, the surplus element is the adverbial part of the statement ('Since I wore this new outfit'). In logical terms, this adverbial part doesn't add any meaning to the main clause: 'I haven't seen any pig around here.' A suitable adverbial part would be: 'Since I've been standing here, I haven't seen any pig around here.' Consequently, in his statement, the subordinate part becomes the main information, creating a new meaning and revealing the personality of the individual.
