Question 2: (Page 68 Vietnamese Language textbook Grade 1)
Answer:
Tuệ Tĩnh or Nguyễn Bá Tĩnh was a medical sage during the Trần dynasty, simultaneously a scholar. He had many students studying medicine, and on one occasion, led them to the Nam Tào, Bắc Đẩu mountains to find new medicinal herbs. He paused on the mountainside and revealed an intention nurtured for decades that had never subsided.
- We've come here to let you know about something I've been contemplating for decades.
The students appeared contemplative, continuously discussing among themselves, thinking that what the teacher was about to say must be grand and magnificent.
- It must be incredibly superior to occupy the teacher's thoughts for decades, right?
Tuệ Tĩnh smiled, gently stroked his beard, nodded:
- No, my students, what I'm about to say is not as distant as the North Sea or as lofty as Mount Tai. What I want to talk about is right beneath your feet.
All students still didn't understand the teacher's intention, so they remained silent. Only the calmest one respectfully asked:
- Teacher, is what you're going to say related to the grass and plants under our feet?
- Yes, I want to talk about the branches and grass that you step on every day... They are the divine beings contributing to the heroic struggles of our ancestors like Hưng Đạo Vương, who defeated the Nguyên invaders. Without them, our country might not exist as it does today.
Tuệ Tĩnh gazed into the distance, as if reminiscing:
- On that day, the Nguyên invaders had intentions to invade our country. King Trần and the court were extremely cautious about guarding the border. Besides training civilians, the court also sent people to supervise weapon forging, preparing elephants, horses, food, and medicine... However, for a long time, the Nguyên family banned the transport of medicine and supplies down for sale to our Southern people. Their sinister plot was to leave our soldiers wounded without the means for healing, making them die in pain and weakening our forces for easy suppression. Recognizing the situation, the court physicians dispersed across the countryside to learn folk remedies using common herbs. Simultaneously, medicinal gardens were established everywhere, ready for use when needed. Nam Tào and Bắc Đẩu mountains are the two medicinal mountains of the ancient Trần kings. Southern water plants have contributed to making our soldiers stronger, more enduring, healthy, and brave in the battle against a formidable, cunning, and overwhelming enemy, maintaining the beauty of the Southern land as it is today.
At this point, Nguyễn Bá Tĩnh added slowly:
- The more I think, the more I appreciate each branch, each root of the grass left by our ancestors. The more I desire to follow in the footsteps of my forefathers to use southern medicine to treat the people of the South. I say this to let you know my intention.
Following the path of the medical sage Tuệ Tĩnh, to this day, hundreds of medicines have been derived from Southern water plants, and thousands of remedies have been synthesized from folk remedies to treat diseases and save lives. Southern medicine has been increasingly developing with precious medicinal formulas that may not be found anywhere else.
In the mesmerizing tale presented on page 68 of the Vietnamese Language textbook Volume 1, question 3 challenges us to reflect on the wisdom of the renowned healer Tuệ Tĩnh. His words serve as a poignant reminder to cherish and appreciate every blade of grass and tree root bestowed upon us by nature. Understanding their intrinsic value is crucial for applying these lessons to our daily lives and avoiding unnecessary waste.
