If you're overwhelmed with photos, to-do lists, and scattered sticky notes, fear not! A bulletin board could be your solution, and you don't need to splurge on an expensive pre-made one. You can create your personalized, visually pleasing bulletin board right in your home using basic materials. Below, we'll guide you through the entire process step by step!
Guidelines
Constructing the Bulletin Board
Pick the base. While corkboard is the classic choice, it can be pricey. Consider alternatives like Bristol board, foam board, or soundproofing board for a budget-friendly option. You can even repurpose sturdy cardboard if available.
Do a trial run before commencing construction. Attach a few paper sheets onto the board to test its strength.
Consider framing it (optional). The frame won't be visible once the project is complete. Nonetheless, a frame facilitates the attachment of the batting and fabric we're about to add. It also offers some protection, which may be beneficial if the board will be used by children.
Add batting (optional). Thin batting provides a softer surface and allows for creating three-dimensional designs. Here's how to attach it:
- Place the board face down on the batting. Cut a piece of batting approximately 2–3 inches (5–7.5cm) larger than the board.
- Fold one corner over the back of the board. Secure it with hot glue, fabric glue, or (if there's a frame) a staple gun.
- Repeat the process around the entire board, ensuring it's taut before securing. Trim any excess batting.
Prepare the fabric. Choose a decorative fabric larger than the bulletin board. Cut out a piece approximately 4–6 inches (10–15cm) larger on each side than your board. Iron it until smooth.
Another affordable option is wrapping paper, although it tends to tear easily.
You might repurpose an old garment or a plastic tablecloth as an alternative.
Wrap the board with fabric. Place the board face-down on the fabric's backside. Pull the fabric tightly around and secure it to the back of the board, similar to how you attached the batting. Ensure the fabric is smooth and free of wrinkles as you proceed.
Board Decoration
Enhance with ribbons. Creating a criss-cross ribbon pattern is a popular choice, especially when combined with batting. Secure ribbons in rows at a 45-degree angle to the board, using glue or staples at the back. Repeat the process with ribbons angled in the opposite direction to form a diamond pattern. Secure the ribbons at each intersection point.
- Sewing buttons at each intersection adds an extra charming touch.
- Feel free to arrange the ribbons to your liking. For example, vertical ribbons can divide the bulletin board into different sections for various purposes.
Transform it into a tufted bulletin board. If you've added batting to your bulletin board, you can create a plush, tufted effect similar to a soft comforter. Here's how:
- Attach a piece of plywood to the back of the board using nails. (Refer to Tips for alternative methods.)
- Insert small, short nails through the fabric and into the plywood, forming a diamond pattern. Ensure they do not penetrate through the plywood.
- Camouflage the nails with upholstery tacks or glue decorative beads on top.
Incorporate laminated embellishments. Laminate a piece of fabric or construction paper. Cut out letters or shapes and affix them along the top edge of the board.
Attach writing materials. Include index cards or blank sheets for jotting down notes. To add visual appeal, consider cutting the paper into circles or using paper in various colors.
Mounting Your Board
Secure the board to the wall with screws. If you own the property or have permission from the owners, use screws to ensure a stable attachment. Place a washer under each screw head to prevent it from crushing the soft board.
Use wall mounting squares for hanging. To avoid wall damage, apply wall mounting squares, using multiple if the board is large. Allow the adhesive to cure for the recommended time stated on the label. Press the board firmly onto the squares.
- Adhesive putty is not suitable for hanging heavy bulletin boards.
Hang the board using a hook or nail. If you prefer not to make holes in the wall, opt for strong adhesive hooks. Pierce two holes in the bulletin board and thread sturdy wire, twine, or ribbon through both. Secure with double knots on either side, then hang it on the hook or nail.

If you prefer not to attach plywood, insert a small wooden block behind the board and nail into it instead.

If you notice wrinkles in your batting or fabric, focus on redoing the corners. Attach each side separately. Fold the excess fabric on one side over and around the board, pulling it tight. Then, fold the final portion of excess fabric under the fold and secure it to the board.
Important Warnings
- A large bulletin board, especially one with batting, can pose a fire risk. Keep all candles and heat sources away from the area. Consider treating the fabric with fireproofing spray as an additional precaution.
