Discover how to craft your own God's eye ornament using yarn and popsicle sticks
The Pueblo and other Native American communities adorned themselves with special ornaments known as God's Eyes, believed to bring good luck and longevity. Crafting one is a delightful activity. Now, you can fashion your own.
Steps
Position 2 sticks together to create an X shape. This forms the framework for the God's Eye.
Wrap one side diagonally 4 times, then repeat the process on the opposite side 4 times to ensure it's secure.
Secure the frame with one hand while keeping the sticks in position.
Using your other hand, wrap the yarn around each arm of the X alternately, pulling tightly and pushing snugly towards the center.
Continue this process until the God's Eye is fully formed.
Trim the yarn approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) from the God's Eye's end. Then, use a quilter's needle to tuck the end securely into the back of the God's Eye.
Tips
- Opt for a multicolored ball of wool instead of using various individual colors.
- To transition to a new color, secure the end of the previous yarn color to an arm of the X with a double knot. Then, begin wrapping with the new color from the same spot. Continue wrapping.
- Once you master making God's Eye, experiment by creating a massive one using two rulers or a miniature version using toothpicks!
