Do you want to impress your family and friends with a unique sculpture but don't feel like making a trip to the art store? Well, you can craft an intriguing sculpture using common household items!
Instructions
Disassemble the hanger. The size of the hanger will dictate the sculpture's dimensions, so choose accordingly. However, the hanger's color has no impact on the sculpture's outcome.
Select a suitable wooden block, either 2 inches by 4 inches or 4 inches by 4 inches.
Drill Two Holes into Your Wooden Block. Each hole should be approximately a quarter of an inch deep (slightly more than half a centimeter). You may opt for two holes, but if using two hangers, drill four.
- Keep the holes small to ensure the hanger fits snugly without slipping out.
- Decide their placement; although they can be any distance apart, spacing affects the sculpture's appearance. For a slender sculpture, place them closer together.
- Ensure at least a three-inch (7.62 cm) separation between holes to accommodate the hosiery snugly.
Insert the Hanger Ends into Two Holes. The holes don't need to align in any specific manner; they can be side by side or opposite each other. Ensure the hanger fits securely in the holes.
- Once snug, manipulate the hanger into your desired shape. The hanger's curves provide the sculpture's basic form.
- For added complexity, consider using a second hanger for the remaining holes. You can cover the extra holes or leave them open.
- Be mindful that wire shaping will be visible, so strategically position the wire to stretch the pantyhose; this will mask the hanger's outline.
- Once positioned correctly, use a glue gun or e6000 glue on the hanger ends inserted into the holes for added security.
Cut the Pantyhose. Trim it so that the closed end measures approximately one foot (30 cm). Discard the open-ended portion.
Stretch the Pantyhose over the Hanger and Base Sculpture. This step is irreversible, so ensure the sculpture is arranged to your liking beforehand. Pull the pantyhose over the hanger and wooden block.
- Aim for a tight fit without causing runs. Leave a few inches of excess pantyhose hanging at the bottom of the block; avoid cutting it off prematurely to prevent the pantyhose from loosening.
Apply White Glue or Acrylic Plaster over the Pantyhose. Coat the pantyhose lightly without excessive application.
- Ensure all surfaces covered by the pantyhose, including the block, are painted. Avoid painting the bottom.
- Once the white glue dries, trim the excess pantyhose from the bottom. Your sculpture is now secure.
Apply Acrylic Paint over the Dried Glue. Opt for shimmering hues like silver or gold, as they work best. Ensure thorough coverage, excluding the block's bottom. Avoid excessive painting. Allow it to dry for one to two days, and your project is complete!
Helpful Tips
-
If you don't have a drill, you can create holes by driving a nail about 1/2 inch into the material and then removing it.
-
For larger sculptures, consider using heavy, solid wire such as insulated or uninsulated electrical wire, steel, or aluminum clothesline wire.
-
Ensure the paint application is even and aesthetically pleasing.
Important Warnings
- Exercise caution when operating the drill.
- Wire poses risks to the eyes and may cause injury; handle with care.
- Use hammer and nails cautiously to avoid accidents.
