A watermark is an image or subtle text, also known as an authentication mark, inserted behind the text in a Word document. Usually, when composing Word documents, individuals want to leave a copyright mark. You can also create your own authentic mark for documents you create.

Adding a watermark to your document
Step 1: Open your Word document where you want to insert a watermark and select the Page Layout tab on the Microsoft Word 2010 menu bar.

Step 2: In the Page Layout tab, choose Watermark and select the type of watermark you prefer.

Once the watermark is chosen, it will be added behind all pages of the Word document.

Removing the watermark from the document
When you no longer wish to use a watermark in your Word document, you can easily remove it. Choose the Page Layout tab -> Watermark -> Remove Watermark.

Creating a Custom Watermark for your document
If you dislike the available watermark styles in Word, you can create your own for your document. You can use a text or image watermark. Select Page Layout -> Watermark -> Custom Watermark.
1. Adding a Text Watermark.
The Printed Watermark dialog box appears, where you select Text watermark and configure some details.
Language: Choose the language for the text.
Text: Enter the text content to be displayed.
Font: Select the font for the text.
Size: Choose the font size for the text.
Color: Select the font color for the text.
Layout: Choose the orientation of the text (Diagonal: diagonal, Horizontal: horizontal).
After configuring the information, select OK.

2. Add Watermark in Image Format.
If you want to include an image, in the Printed Watermark dialog box, select Picture watermark. Then click on Select Picture, choose the image you want to use as a watermark, and press Insert.

You can set the width of the image in Scale, check the square box next to Washout to set the image as a faded background behind the text. Then select OK.
