Creating and Editing Gradients in Adobe Illustrator
1. Creating Simple Gradients
To create a simple gradient, begin by using the Rectangle Tool to draw a basic rectangle shape and work on it. Then, open the Gradient panel by clicking the icon on the toolbar or accessing Window => Gradient.
Click anywhere on the gradient slider to generate a default black and white gradient. The Reverse Gradient icon above allows us to invert the direction, from left to right or right to left. Alternatively, we can manually adjust the gradient angle by entering values in the box.
Additionally, there are numerous preset options and settings available. Furthermore, we can apply gradients to fills or strokes. If we change the Type from Linear to Radial, it will emit from the center towards the edges (and can also be reversed).
2. Modifying Gradient Colors
If desired, we can also adjust the color at the starting point. Suppose we want more black tones, we simply drag the arrow icon on the gradient slider to the right.
Next, every gradient requires a minimum of 2 colors. When hovering over the slider on the screen, a plus icon will appear. Click on it to add additional color samples, or alternatively, you can double-click on a color sample and choose any color.
When using Global Swatches, you can access the Swatches panel and modify colors. Subsequently, it will automatically update in all instances, including gradients.
Adjusting Gradient Position and Blur
To remove any color stop, simply click and drag it out.
Additionally, if desired, you can expand various colors by dragging color stops or entering values into the Location box. For instance, for an orange color, you can enter 50% to display it at the center.
To change the opacity of any color stop, select the respective color stop and choose a value from the dropdown menu or enter a value directly.
To adjust the position of individual colors, use the small diamond icon located at the top corner of the slider, or you can input percentages in the Location box for precise values.
