Step 1: Begin by opening Illustrator and adding the image you wish to create a border for into the software.

Step 2: Next, proceed to select the Rectangle Tool (shortcut key M).

Step 3: Then, you need to draw a rectangle using the Rectangle Tool. The size of this rectangle must be larger than the size of the image.

Step 4: Once the rectangle is drawn, right-click on it and choose Arrange -> Bring Forward.

Step 5: At this point, you have a border around the image. However, the border may still be misaligned, and you need to adjust them to perfection. Select the Selection Tool (V) and create a selection area that includes both the image and the border.

Step 6: Once you have selected the image and the border, the Align toolset will appear. Choose Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center to align both horizontally and vertically.

Here is the result after completing the border creation and alignment for the image.

Method 2: Creating a border for the image using the Pen Tool.
The Pen Tool is a drawing tool in Illustrator, and with this method, you simply use the Pen Tool to draw the outlines around the image.
Step 1: First, open the image and select the Pen Tool (Shortcut key: P).

Step 2: Then, adjust the thickness of the outline in the Strock section of the Appearance panel. Typically, the thickness of the outline is 0.03 cm.

Step 3: Next, draw the outlines around the image. Place the initial point of the Pen Tool at the corner of the image to let it snap.

Step 4: After completing the outline, you will achieve the result as shown below. If you do not wish to round the corners, you are finished here.

Step 5: If you prefer rounded corners, select the Selection Tool (V) and click on the drawn outline. Then, press Ctrl to reveal the corner rounding handles and drag them to achieve the desired curvature.

Step 6: Upon completion, you will receive a result similar to the image below.
