This article guides you through the steps to create links in PowerPoint 2010. Similar steps can be applied for other versions like PowerPoint 2016, 2013.
Imagine in a Biology presentation slide, you have a block of text and an image -> You want clicking on the text block to make the image appear instantly.
Follow the steps below to create links in PowerPoint:
Step 1: Select the image (Bird image) you want to link -> go to Animations tab -> choose Add Animation -> then select an effect for the image.
Step 2: After applying the animation to the image, in the Advanced Animation section, choose Trigger -> select On Click of -> then choose the name of the text block.
Now you have created the link. You can run the slideshow and click on the text block -> the image will appear instantly. For slides with multiple text blocks and images, you can follow the same steps as explained.

And here, when you click on the Bird block -> the image will instantly appear.
For PowerPoint 2007, the process of creating links in slides is slightly different
Assuming you are still using a text block and an image as before, follow these steps to add a link in PowerPoint 2007.
Step 1: Select the image to link -> then go to the Animation tab -> choose Custom Animation to access the Custom Animation interface.
Step 2: The Custom Animation interface appears on the right -> choose Add Effect -> then select the animation effect for the image you want.
Step 3: You will see the animation name in Custom Animation -> click on the inverted triangle -> then select Timing.
Step 4: The Blinds dialogue box appears -> choose Triggers -> select Start effect on click of -> then choose the name of the text block you want to link.
Finally, click OK to complete, and press F5 to start the slideshow and see the result.
Step 1: Select (highlight) or click the text block you want to link -> then go to Insert -> choose Hyperlink (you can also press the shortcut Ctrl + K) or right-click and choose Hyperlink.
In the Insert Hyperlink interface, to create a specific link, simply click on the corresponding option to add the link.
Step 2: The Insert Hyperlink interface appears -> here, you have 4 options for linking as follows:
- Existing File or Web Page: Used to link to files or web pages.
- Place in This Document: Used to link to any slide in the PowerPoint file.
- Create New Document: Used to link to a newly created folder.
- Email Address: Used to link to an email address.
- Link to Existing File or Web Page: This is used to link to files or web pages.
- Link to a Place in This Document: This is used to link to any slide in the PowerPoint file.
- Create New Document Link: This is used to link to a newly created folder.
- Email Address Link: This is used to link to an email address.
In the Insert Hyperlink interface, simply choose the type of link you want to create by clicking on the corresponding option.
Example 1: Creating links to slides in PowerPoint for instance:
In Insert Hyperlink -> choose Link to a Place in This Document, in the Select a place in this document section -> choose the slide you want to link to -> then click OK to complete.
Example 2: Creating links to other websites
In Insert Hyperlink -> choose Link to Existing File or Web page -> Then enter the website address in Address -> Finally, click OK to create the link.
