Approximately 85% of Indonesia's population is Muslim, but the people of Bali predominantly follow Hinduism. While not as strict as Islam, there are a few things to keep in mind when visiting temples and shrines:
- Dress appropriately and act with courtesy: When visiting temples, wear a shirt that covers your shoulders and upper arms. Wrap your waist and legs with a sarong. Footwear can be shoes or sandals, as long as it looks neat and respectful.
- Avoid using the left hand for touching or handing over items: In Bali, people opt for water rather than toilet paper for cleansing and often use the left hand for this purpose. Consequently, the left hand is considered less clean, and it's polite not to use it for touching or passing things to others. However, using both hands is highly appreciated.
Additionally, there are other rules such as refraining from using the index finger for pointing or signaling, avoiding touching someone's head, and refraining from stepping on ceremonial objects.
