CZ and Binance are facing lawsuits from US regulatory agencies, accused of abetting money laundering and terrorism.

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, has seen its CEO Changpeng Zhao and strategic director Samuel Lim sued by the CFTC, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. This commission oversees the trading and investment processes related to futures contracts, swaps, or certain options.

According to this lawsuit, Binance and its CEO are accused of violating trading and derivative laws. Transactions on Binance have never been reported to the CFTC, regardless of transaction value. According to this commission, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world has ignored federal market laws in the US, including laws on preventing and detecting money laundering, preventing financing of terrorism,...

Launched in June 2017, Binance skyrocketed to become the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world in just 180 days. Now boasting around 90 million users globally, their daily trading volume has surged to an estimated $9 billion over the past 24 hours.

In May 2021, Binance's monthly revenue from derivative trades hit $1.14 billion. This figure, according to the CFTC in August 2020, was only $63 million. About 16% of that total trading value is executed by U.S. citizens.

A Binance spokesperson remarked: 'The lawsuit comes as a surprise and disappointment, given our close collaboration with the CFTC over the past two years. Nevertheless, we remain committed to working with regulators in the U.S. and around the world. The most prudent path forward is always to protect users and collaborate with regulators to establish clear and reasonable regulatory frameworks.'

In efforts to combat money laundering and support high-tech crime prevention, a Binance spokesperson revealed they've allocated approximately $80 million to partners to enhance transaction monitoring, market surveillance, and investigative tools for operational purposes.

However, U.S. authorities argue that CZ and parties within Binance's leadership have failed to tightly manage Binance's operations, thereby condoning violations of U.S. laws, including aiding U.S. residents in circumventing regulatory barriers set up by Binance to prevent unlawful activities.

In another development, last month a director at Binance stated the exchange would pay fines to halt the investigation into Binance's U.S.-based strategic director, Patrick Hillman. Binance's defense is that Hillman was unaware of anti-bribery, anti-corruption, and anti-money laundering laws.

Another U.S. government investigation, specifically by the Department of Justice, into Binance has been ongoing since 2018, aimed at determining whether Binance has facilitated money laundering activities and allowed circumvention of U.S. sanctions.
