Certainly, among today's computer users, there have been instances where, upon finishing work and shutting down the computer, the next morning's attempt to resume work results in a Windows notification stating it can't boot, displaying a black screen... Due to the habit of some individuals to store their data in Documents or on the Desktop, reinstalling Windows would inevitably lead to data loss.
Guide: How to Back Up Data when Windows 8 is Unresponsive
Troubleshooting Windows 8 boot failure may stem from MBR errors, accidental deletion of boot files, or malware corruption, software conflicts, etc.
Prepare a Windows 8 disk or USB for data transfer, and access BIOS to set boot preference to CD/DVD.
Step 1:
- Insert the Windows 8 disk into the CD/DVD drive.
- Connect a USB to the computer.
- Power on the computer.
- When prompted with “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD,” press any key to enter the Windows 8 setup menu.
- On this interface, select Next to proceed.
Step 2: At this stage, select Repair your computer to proceed.
Step 3: In this step, choose Troubleshoot.
Step 4: In this step, opt for Advanced options.
Step 5: In this step, select Command Prompt to access the command line interface.
Step 6: In the command interface, type notepad and press Enter.
Step 7: The notepad window appears, select File\Open.
Step 8: Choose All Files (*.*), then we can access drive C (the window installation drive) to copy, paste data to the drive needed to be saved such as drive D or USB.
After backing up the data, we can reinstall Windows or troubleshoot errors.
- Note
- Do not double-click on the file in the interface, or select Open. Only copy and paste to back up the data.
The steps we performed above are actually the file opener of notepad, but in that interface, there are functions like copy, paste, we only rely on them to rescue data before operation, to avoid loss of important data.
After completing the above steps, all your data will be completely recovered before proceeding with installation or repair of the operating system. If you are using Windows 7 and cannot access the system, you can refer to how to back up data when Windows 7 is not working.
