Airlines sometimes cannot guarantee their schedules due to objective reasons such as weather, natural disasters... beyond their control. So what should you do when your flight is delayed?

Reasons for Flight Delays
Airlines categorize reasons into two groups - technical errors and other reasons. If your flight is delayed due to weather conditions (at your departure or destination), control handover (including control tower issues/traffic or airspace closures) and crew (for example, they need rest due to technical issues with other flights and they need to work extra hours, so rest is essential for flight safety) then flight delay is considered beyond the airline's control.
Most airlines will rebook your connecting flight if you are flying with the same airline for the entire journey. After a 4-hour delay, airlines will provide you with meal vouchers.
What if your next connecting flight is not with the same airline or you are stuck overnight in a strange city?
1. Compensation from the Airline
The airline must provide you with meal vouchers (you can request them anytime, most airlines distribute vouchers at the check-in area for that flight). If you're stranded overnight, they will arrange accommodation for you. If their hotel is fully booked, you will be reimbursed for the room bill. But you need to double-check with them about the price, and don't forget to take photos of all documents before sending them away.

2. Stay Calm – Focus on Rescheduling
This often happens when you have an important meeting or other significant events canceled due to flight delays. Or some think getting angry will make airline staff afraid and fulfill your request. But in reality, the calmer and more polite you are, with clear requests, the quicker and smoother your case will be handled.
3. Avoid Alcohol
You will be given beverage vouchers, but refrain from using them for alcohol or alcoholic beverages. By the time the plane is ready for takeoff, you might be held back due to excessive alcohol levels.
4. Remember: You Can't Change It
You're frustrated, angry, and anxious when this happens. But flight delays are entirely natural. There's not much you can do to alter the situation. So, relax and wait for updates.
Each airline has its own policies for passengers in such situations. If your flight is delayed, you should request the airline to cover your food and accommodation expenses during the wait. Some airlines offer cheap flight tickets but have no policies for stranded passengers.
However, if it's due to natural disasters or reasons beyond the airline's control, you won't receive any assistance policies.

5. Information is Key
Do your research to see if there are any other flights by the same airline heading to your destination city. You can request to switch to that flight at no cost.
6. Check if Subsequent Flights are Delayed or Cancelled
For multi-leg flights, you need to connect with airline staff and explain your situation to receive timely assistance.

7. Checked Baggage
You need to consider and listen to announcements about your checked baggage during the waiting time at the airport to avoid further complications. Depending on the airline, your checked baggage will either be automatically transferred to the replacement flight or you will have to reclaim and recheck it from scratch.
8. Insurance
If you have purchased airline insurance from the insurance company, you should call them, as they may help you secure a seat as quickly as possible.
