Kang the Conqueror is poised to step onto the silver screen in the blockbuster Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania.
Kang the Conqueror is currently the most anticipated figure among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts. Regarded as the 'Next Thanos' of the MCU, Kang has officially made his debut through the first trailer of the epic Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, starring Jonathan Majors.
Previously, audiences were introduced to this antagonist through a variant named He Who Remains, appearing in the final episode of Loki's first season (2021). The demise of He Who Remains unleashed the multiverse, paving the way for Kang's return and his impending dominance across upcoming MCU projects.
The Origins of Kang the Conqueror in the Source Material
According to Marvel comics, Kang was originally a scientist named Nathaniel Richards, living in the 31st century, and a descendant of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four) and also assumed the identity of Doctor Doom - a notorious villain in the Marvel comic universe. After successfully researching time travel methods, Nathaniel traveled back to ancient Egypt and became the pharaoh Rama-Tut.
Here, he faced off against the Fantastic Four but couldn't withstand them and was forced to retreat to the 31st century. However, an incident occurred when he was swept by the time stream to the 41st century. With his genius mind, Nathaniel decided to stay in the future, sweeping the entire planet, becoming the absolute ruler known as Kang the Conqueror.
Throughout Marvel comic history, Kang has time-traveled numerous times, creating different versions of himself in both the past and the future. Among them are versions standing on the side of righteousness like Iron Lad, a founding member of the Young Avengers; and there are also villainous variants like Mr. Gryphon, who has allied with aliens to covertly take over Earth.
The Power of Kang the Conqueror
Kang is one of the greatest, most dangerous villains of both superhero teams, the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. However, this villain himself does not possess any superpowers. As mentioned earlier, he is originally a scientist living in the 31st century, with his most potent 'weapon' being his profound knowledge and sharp intellect.
Additionally, Kang is a brilliant military strategist, possessing a vast arsenal spanning human history, from the past to the far future. This includes the Damocles Base, a modern flying ship designed in the shape of a sword capable of 'tearing' through space and effortlessly traversing the time stream.
Moreover, when necessary, Kang can assemble a formidable army, with billions of soldiers from all over space and time, to support his conquest plans. It is thanks to such vast weaponry and military might that Kang has simultaneously attacked multiple different time periods, leaving superheroes unable to intervene effectively.
Kang's only weakness perhaps lies in his peculiar and strict code of honor. For this villain, conquest plans only truly matter when they endure challenging battles and foes are defeated convincingly. He absolutely never resorts to deceitful tricks, unfair play, such as going back to the past and killing superheroes when they were still children. It may be Kang's nobility, but also a vulnerability that has led to bitter failures.
The Influence of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU
Kang is set to become the main antagonist not only in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, but also in the MCU for many years to come. More importantly, this character serves as a gateway to connect to many other Marvel Studios projects, including Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, or Young Avengers, and of course, the indispensable X-Men.
In the original, Kang and Ant-Man don't have much connection, and Marvel hasn't even released any comics specifically for these two characters. However, he is perfectly suited to become the main antagonist in Marvel Studios' upcoming blockbuster for one reason only: the quantum realm.
Thanks to Ant-Man's knowledge of the quantum realm, the new Avengers could reverse the past and defeat Thanos in Endgame. It's very likely that Kang will also use similar theories to develop time travel technology for himself. For some reason, he gets stuck in the quantum realm and has to rely on Ant-Man's help to escape.
This leads us to the 5th Avengers film, titled The Kang Dynasty, similar to the title of the comic series by Kurt Busiek, released from 2001 - 2002. This series revolves around Kang's return to the future and conquest of the entire Earth, forcing the Avengers to once again unite to defeat him. In light of the analysis above, Ant-Man might inadvertently free Kang from the quantum realm and help him return to the future to carry out his schemes.
Certainly, at this current juncture, it's still too early to ascertain what Marvel Studios has in store for Kang the Conqueror, and furthermore, the future of the MCU. However, the emergence of this villain in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania is sure to set the stage for Marvel to truly embark on a thrilling and grand multiverse showdown, following the setbacks left by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
