This path is essentially a 14-step staircase (degré: step), measuring 5.75m in length, 3.3m in width, perpendicular to Cléry and Beauregard streets (with a higher ground level) and evenly divided into two lanes with the staircase railing in the middle.
On both sides of Degrés are the side walls of two buildings without windows or entrances. These buildings are numbered according to Cléry and Beauregard streets, so there are no administrative houses on Degrés.
Degrés is perhaps the quietest street in Paris. Not far from it is Bonne-Nouvelle Boulevard, where street artists often come to perform music. Established in the 1650s, Degrés carries the historical imprint of Paris.
It features as one of the captivating scenes in the film Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran (Mr. Ibrahim and the Essence of the Quran), directed by François Dupeyron (1950-2016), adapted from the novel of the same name, released in 2003.
In the movie, the flower-vending girls of the neighborhood converge on Degrés Street.
Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran holds a commendable rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb. The film brought Omar Sharif, the lead actor, the César Award in 2004.
