There are always clever ways to tidy up apps you no longer use. Apple has introduced Offloading Apps for those used infrequently.
This feature resides on the Home Screen, denoted by a small download icon. When tapping on an app's icon, you'll wait a few seconds for it to reload. Only download large apps when on WiFi. This allows you to store important data while freeing up app storage space.
To uninstall an app, go to Settings => General => iPhone / iPad Storage. Find the app you wish to free up space for. Tap on its name, then tap Offload App. In the subsequent dialog, tap Offload App again. After a few minutes, the app will be gone, but its files will remain.
Automatic App Offloading
If you're constantly running low on device storage, you can set iOS to automatically offload apps. App offloading kicks in automatically when your device runs low on storage space. This method works similarly to how Apple TV handles limited storage.
To activate this feature, navigate to Settings => General => iPhone / iPad Storage, and tap Enable next to Offload Unused Apps. A green checkmark will appear next to Enable, indicating everything is set up.
You can't disable this setting within the same menu. When you return to this setup area, the options won't appear. To disable app offloading, go to Settings => iTunes and App Store. Scroll down to the bottom and toggle the switch next to Offload Unused Apps. You can re-enable the feature from the same screen.
What's happening with iTunes?
The latest version of iTunes removes support for iOS apps. However, you still have a library for apps living on your hard drive. Even when connecting your device to Mac, there's no option for device apps in iTunes.
According to Apple, if you don't want to use an app you installed from the App Store, you can uninstall it using an older version of iTunes.
However, reverting to an older iTunes version comes with limitations. At this time, you won't receive automatic updates through the Mac App Store. Instead, you'll need to visit Apple's website and manually download the latest Mac version.
