Dengue Fever (DF) - a cyclic epidemic disease is undergoing dangerous fluctuations in Vietnam in general and Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - the Southern region in particular.
The healthcare sector is striving to control the epidemic, however, people's negligence, complacency, and lack of understanding in disease prevention are complicating the situation.
Startling Numbers
According to statistics from the Preventive Health Department, Ministry of Health of Vietnam, the number of DF cases is steadily increasing. The epidemic hotspots are Hanoi and provinces in the Southern region such as Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Long An, Soc Trang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Tay Ninh. Following the cycle, there is a widespread DF outbreak every five years, with 2015 being a continuation of the 2009 epidemic.
In Hanoi, DF has spread to 29/30 provinces and cities, a 300% increase compared to the same period last year. Hanoi's DF epidemic is urgent and alarming with the sharpest increase nationwide. The number of DF cases will continue to rise, peaking in November. In Ho Chi Minh City and Southern provinces, DF cases are also surging due to the rainy season, high humidity, and stagnant rainwater creating favorable conditions for the Aedes mosquito - the virus-transmitting mosquito. There have been 18 DF-related deaths, with 16 concentrated in the Southern region - the epicenter of this year's DF epidemic.

Aedes mosquitoes - the intermediary vector of Dengue Fever virus transmission
Dengue Fever is a disease with a high mortality rate. It can begin with fevers and if not promptly treated, can lead to complications such as pulmonary edema, renal failure, liver damage, heart failure, dengue hemorrhagic fever, sudden blindness... When patients contract Dengue Fever, the probability of experiencing one of these complications is 15%, with the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever being 1% after contracting Dengue Fever.
Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for this disease. Therefore, the most important task is disease prevention, specifically mosquito control - the source of Dengue Fever virus transmission and spread.
The Indifference and Complacency of the Population in Disease Prevention
The healthcare sector is making every effort to implement measures to prevent Dengue Fever transmission, but many parents are still negligent in protecting their children and themselves from Dengue Fever. What's even more dangerous is that parents often have the habit of treating mosquito bites on their children casually, even using some mosquito repellent products without fully understanding their efficacy and side effects, instead of actively preventing mosquito bites for their children.
Therefore, every family needs to focus on Dengue Fever prevention by combating mosquitoes: sleeping under mosquito nets, maintaining a clean living environment, eliminating stagnant water in containers - eradicating mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, to always be proactive everywhere, at all times, it is necessary to apply safe mosquito repellent cream for young children and family members.
