II. Sample Essay: Describing the Kale Plant
To maintain good health, humans need to combine various factors, among which, the nutrients provided in meals are essential. Apart from foods rich in protein, fat, and other nutrients like meat and fish, we also need to incorporate fiber and vitamins from vegetables. Among all vegetables, my favorite is kale - also known as green cabbage.
Green cabbage or kale is a type of plant belonging to the cabbage family. Overall, the kale plant wears a deep green outfit from its roots to its tips. Unlike other tall and towering plants, kale prefers to 'huddle,' sticking close to the ground. Its roots are short, slender, usually shallowly anchored in the soil, often only about 10-15cm deep, with few spreading widely.
The stem is round, as wide as a baby's fist, varying in height. The flowers of this plant cluster closely together into large, round, soft and spongy buds. They look really pleasing to the eye! Kale has very developed leaves, with long leaf blades and large stalks. The leaves grow from the stem, much higher than other parts, resembling giant hands, connecting to each other to cover and protect the budding flowers inside. True to its somewhat 'picky' name, kale is a rather 'high-maintenance' plant. It is drought-tolerant, but water-demanding, only able to grow in moist soil with plenty of organic matter, and it requires a lot in terms of nutrients and temperature to ensure robust growth and development.
Unlike other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli utilizes only its inner florets for cooking, while its roots, stems, and leaves can serve as animal feed. Rich in essential nutrients like vitamins, fiber, and cobalt, broccoli is a favored choice for daily family meals. It can be boiled, stir-fried, souped, or even eaten raw. Freshly selected and prepared broccoli retains its crispness, freshness, and is widely loved, especially by women for weight loss support.
With its numerous benefits and reasonable pricing, broccoli has become a familiar dish in every Vietnamese household.
