Amidst the myriad hues of pine and the stark white of the sands, our school stands modest and humble. Nestled behind the pines are three rows of houses arranged in a U-shape with vibrant red tiled roofs, bright yellow lime walls. The school sits on a plot of land nearly hectare in size, bordered by the national highway, nestled against the dunes. Just a couple of dozen meters off National Highway 1, the school gate stands tall with two sturdy pillars, paved with smooth and shiny pebble stones, adorned with a rectangular steel sign painted in a vibrant blue with meticulously crafted white letters spelling out the school's name. Guarding the gate and enclosing the remaining three sides of the school are rows of meticulously arranged pine trees, standing steadfastly together, whispering amongst themselves. Stepping through the navy blue wrought-iron gate, I marvel at the expansive playground, paved with impeccably smooth concrete replacing the hot, dusty, and inconvenient sandpit of the past. Tall phoenix trees, surrounded by brick seating, provide a delightful spot for relaxation.
In the classrooms, the ground has been raised higher, and the three rows of tin-roofed houses with walls previously peeling off cement have been replaced by three rows of solid, clean-built houses. The spacious veranda in front of the class is wide, with walls painted in fresh golden lime, and the classroom doors are painted light blue. The window frames are sturdy wooden ones. The classrooms are very airy. The desks, chairs, and green boards have all been repainted, neatly arranged, straightened out, still carrying the smell of fresh paint and new wood. There are no new signs yet, but from the old location, it will surely be my classroom for this new school year. The two rows of standing houses are still classrooms as before, and the row of horizontal houses is still the office of the Headmaster, the library, etc. In front of that row of houses, a column is built to hold a tall flagpole, above which the red flag with a yellow star is flying in the wind. Behind the row of houses, a distant stretch is a sandbank with newly planted cool green coconut trees dotting the green on the white sandy background.
