II. Sample Essay: Describing a Sunflower
Among all flower species, my favorite is the sunflower due to its vibrant beauty and symbolism, although I have never had the chance to see it up close. During the recent holiday on April 30th - May 1st, I got the opportunity to visit the sunflower garden in the town. The outing was truly enjoyable and filled with memories of the radiant flowers always facing the sun.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a vast, brilliant golden sunflower field stretching like an endless carpet to the distant horizon, seemingly without a visible end. I wandered, admiring and photographing each sunflower to fulfill my long-held desire. Sunflowers, belonging to the aster family, boast relatively tall stems, reaching about 1.5 - 1.7 meters in height. The stems grow straight, soft, light green, with a dense covering of hairs that may cause itching for sensitive skin. Usually, each stem bears a single flower, although some may produce two or three additional branches, albeit rarely.
The leaves of the sunflower grow uniformly from the base to the top, but the lower ones are mostly old and fallen, leaving only sparse remnants, while the upper ones near the top are fresh, lush green. Sunflower leaves are few but as large as three or four adult hands put together, resembling a green heart shape. The veins are sparse, the leaf surface smooth, and the edges sometimes serrated. Sunflower blooms are large, resembling golden plates, with a diameter of about 25cm. The inner part of the flower resembles a large bowl of rice, sometimes larger, dark yellow in color, surrounded by evenly arranged thin yellow petals. The green base of the flower attaches firmly to the stem. The unique feature of this flower is that when it blooms, it always faces the direction of the rising sun, hence its name, sunflower, and sometimes referred to as the flower of the sun.
Sunflowers are primarily cultivated for seed extraction, processed into various food products, serving the food industry. Some are dedicated to enthusiastic tourists interested in visiting this giant flower species. Sunflowers carry significant meanings, symbolizing optimism, hope, always facing towards the light and all things beautiful. In love, they represent loyalty, trust, and warmth.
I have a deep affection for these beautiful, vibrant, and meaningful flowers. After the tour, I managed to obtain a sunflower sapling and brought it home to plant in front of my house. I will nurture it diligently so it can blossom into beautiful flowers, embellishing my home and my dreams.
