There are numerous reasons why the Chunin exams in Boruto differ significantly from those in Naruto.
Chunin exams are a series of tests designed to evaluate genin's readiness to achieve the next rank in their ninja career. For some, it's a great opportunity to prove their worth. For others, it's where their ninja dreams come to an end.
While the exams have aspects of assessment to gauge ninja potential, others see them as potential disasters due to the inherent dangers. However, the horror in Boruto pales in comparison to Naruto for these reasons.
Chunin Exams in the Naruto era are more brutal

In the Naruto era, Chunin exams were notoriously brutal, where participants could die at any moment without accountability. While it simulated the realities of the shinobi world to some extent, it posed a significant challenge for many without any assistance.
It becomes an excessively challenging requirement for newcomers from the academy, or even for those who have completed lower-level missions. Moreover, there is a risk of killing many young ninjas before they have the chance to fully unleash their potential, akin to how Gaara ruthlessly took innocent lives in the deadly forest.
Chunin Exams in the Boruto era feel more 'human'

Currently, Boruto has introduced two versions of the Chunin exams, although both have different procedures and outcomes, everything here is executed to lean more towards humanity compared to the Naruto era. No ninjas die in the Chunin exams in Boruto, and even afterwards, no one is seriously injured to the extent of causing significant future health issues.
Chunin Exams in the Boruto era hold more humanitarian significance

With the advent of Boruto, the ninja world has entered an era of peace. Ninja villages no longer clash with each other, so the Chunin exams hold more humanitarian significance compared to Naruto's era. Each participating village must enact regulations to lower the severity to minimize casualties.
In Naruto, at this time, villages still clashed with each other, so they were allowed to kill young ninjas from other villages as long as it didn't violate the exam's regulations. There were even villages whose primary goal was to kill as many ninjas from other villages as possible, serving as the greatest motivation. Hence, many deaths in the Chunin exams during the Naruto era were understandable.
