Dinh Cau is a religious site for the coastal residents of Phu Quoc, belonging to the system of ancestral and goddess worship. It is believed that this belief system was introduced from Central to Southern fishermen around the late 17th century. The people trust Bà – Cậu in their fishing profession, known as the “Bà – Cậu occupation,” and Dinh Cau is born from this faith.

Initially, Dinh Cau was just a small temple. By 1937, it was rebuilt and underwent several renovations, becoming as majestic as it is today. Regarding its origin, Phu Quoc locals have a legend that before being named Phu Quoc, this land was called Xich Tho due to its red soil. This land was governed by the Water Dragon Goddess, known as the Island Lady.

According to fishermen, Dinh Cau was formerly known as the Long Vuong Temple, with the main shrine called Thach Son Temple. Hundreds of years ago, many fishermen lost their lives at sea due to rough waves. One day, a rocky promontory emerged at the seashore, believed to be an auspicious sign. The locals built a temple hoping for divine protection. Initially made of leaves, after numerous renovations, the shrine now stands grander.
